English Language UsageLanguage of Learning: • English first choice language in ALL Universities for teaching• English and Urdu to be taught in 92% of Private Schools (Primary & High – ages 5 to

English Language Influence: • 22 million internet users (more than Australia’s whole population)• Satellite and Cable television (with US channels)• Legal and judiciary system based on British (English) Law

English Part of Schools Categorization: • Pakistan has four categories of school-level education:

1. Private elite English medium schools 2. Private non-elite English medium schools 3. State Urdu medium schools 4. Madrasas – Islamic schools

• Advantage of English medium schools over on-English State schools:Better paid and educated teaches in States schools still produce poor results, because a pupil learning English in a state school needs a further 2.5 years to achieve what a Year 3 pupil in a private non-elite school can do in English

7

Page 8: Pakistan opportunities education_003

8

Growing Role of Private Schools• Most non-elite private schools are low-

cost, commercial organizations that are driven to turning over a profit rather than the educational welfare of the student

• Average rural family spends 13 – 20% of its income on their children’s education

• Learning outcomes significantly better in private schoolsas compared with state schools

Page 9: Pakistan opportunities education_003

9

Sports and Extra Curricular Activities• Private educational institutions offer better sports training and extra

curricular activities (e.g. arts, crafts, writing, debating, computer skills etc.)

• Sports training and competitions inter classes• Summer and winter sports training camps to encourage participation

in sports and extra curricular activities• Outside of the elite schools of Pakistan, there is social

discouragement by parents upon children to pursue sporting activities, with a bias towards academic achievement, which leads to job/employment certainty
