Welcome.We have just entered September and already the weather is getting a little unpredictable. And this means that it’s the right time to be thinking about preparing our homes for winter and ward off any costly damage from broken pipe work. Coming up is our top 5 tips for preparing for the big freeze in 2016.

1. Insulate exposed pipe workEvery home has pipe work in your garden, garage or outside area. As you would expect, these pips will be the most prone to changes in temperature during the colder months.In order to avoid any unnecessary pipe freezing and consequent cracking you should where possible provide insulation. This can be done using pipe lagging - covering the pipe with heat retaining material or tubing - which can be found in most good DIY or online stores.

2. Check loft insulation is in good conditionKeep your house warm by having good loft and wall cavity insulation. This doesn't have to be a big expense; there are a number of Government grants that can help pay for the installation. Check with your local council for more info.

3. Make sure that your gutters are clear of blockagesIf you can, regularly remove and any leaves in gutters to prevent them from falling into the drain pipe and blocking them. Trust us, you and your wallet will be grateful in the long term.

4. Check that you know where your internal stop tap is and ensure that it worksIf disaster strikes it would be best to know where to find your stop tap and turn off the water supply to reduce further damage to property.

5. Ensure that your roof is well maintainedIf you are a home owner make sure that your roof is well looked after and that any broken or missing tiles are replaced. If you are renting, encourage your landlord or housing association to do this for you.
