Obey• .• It doesn’t mean anything (apathetic teen comment award

– ERIN!)• Janel: Comes from the word “Obedience” to follow

directions when being told.• Chess: To commit oneself to SUBSERVIENCE • KT: To Give IN. To serve others before your self. • Dolpho: Serfs obey the feudal lords.

Obey Demographics • .Erin: TEEEEEN boys. Not a lot of girls wearing OBEY snapbacks and

sweaters.

• Ari: Skaters • Anna: It’s the style that is connected to skaters. Stores like ZUMIEZ

advertise it and people buy it. HOT TOPIC TOO. • Alex: Being a hype beast has no race. People who wear OBEY think

they’re unique but they’re not…because every other boy JUST LIKE THEM has the same shirt.

• Syed: OBEY has a message to it. If you buy it, you’ll be promoting his message. • Chess: It’s anti-conformist….but it’s so common that it’s no

conformist. And there’s irony here.• Dolpho: You buy it so people notice you’re wearing it.

“Conspicuous consumption.”• Khiri: This started as a fad, hot for a moment and in high demand.

But now, it’s easier to get…the brand as changed. But if it’s difficult to get, then by wearing it, your status is revealed.

Obey Demographics • Teens who think they’re rebels• Hipsters! People who…follow mainstream trends• Maybe Graffiti artists?• Jess lives under a rock. So do we all. (SOMETIMES)• People who wanna “represent”• Maybe we only pay attention to teens who wear this, since

we’re biased as teenagers. • He could have been aiming for a DIFFERENT demographic, but

maybe it just became a teen trend.• BRANDING• SARCASTIC!• SATIRICAL!• REBELLIOUS!• POWER.

Obey is…Shepard Fairey

Shepard Fairey is the man behind OBEY GIANT, the graphics that have changed the way people see art and the urban landscape. What started with an absurd sticker he created in 1989 while studying at the Rhode Island School of Design has since evolved into a worldwide street art campaign, as well as an acclaimed body of fine art.

Similarities? Differences?

Syed: The original has more detail. More on the face. The new version is ZOOOOMED in, just one the face. And only has a couple of the features of the original. Erin: very close up, darker. You can see it more.KT: He accentuated the parts of the face, making them darker around the eyes and mouth. It’s creepier…ALSO…I wouldn’t know it’s Andre the giant unless I was told. Anna: Less detail, easier to produce and copy. “more graphic or illustative.” –kozakJanel: The new one has less “value” to me. Choose someone NEW! Why still Andre the Giant?? Gio: The second is more open to interpretation. It looks less like a person…and more like…a racoooooooon?

Page 15: Obey Shepard Fairey!

Similarities? Differences?Angel: IN the beginning it looked more realistic, like an ID picture…now it looks more cartoonish and up close.

Andia: Same colors, black and white. John: This is the artist keeping it similarRachel: CONTRAST! It stands out…simpler colors are part of his style. TASH” Similar to BNE…OBEY is establishing a method in a straightforward way. It’s

like a design TACTIC. Esteph: The early picture is his whole face. The later one is a close up. Michael: The BRAND NEW ONE….he’s really telling you to OBEY. The early one doesn’t send a message…the newer one looks scarier. Wing: Those EYES! They’re piercing and daring you to REBEL. The lips are closed and not saying anything! The face says everything. StephL: As time moved on the artist was changing how it looked, and his perspective changes. Each art piece passes through time periods.

Shepard FaireyGio: Revealing the raw truth of everything. But DAMN! That’s so horrible! The whole message of OBEY is all diluted now!Syed: it goes to show how most of our products send subliminal messages. KT: Everything has an underlying or hidden meaning. “YOU WANT IT” or “YOU NEED IT” Even if you don’t actually want or need it. Anna: It’s making me question society right now. We do the same things as the video….

Page 21: Obey Shepard Fairey!

Shepard FaireyRACHEL: The movie shows a very straight forward meaningAngel: Brings back the idea of being sarcastic, like OBEY and such. BUY, CONSUME. FIT INTO THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE.Camila & Tash: Totes agree with Angel. Everything you see affects the way you live. We don’t see the dark undertone to things …it affects our culture and ourselves. jess: We’re a consumer nation to begin with. Usually we see and buy rather than think. The artist is commenting on this. LINA: As the image changes, it looks more skeletal.

“I can express myself…and I feel that everybody should have the ability to express themselves…as long as what they’re doing isn’t hurting someone else.”

1970-

Page 29: Obey Shepard Fairey!

Shepard FaireyCheez-it: really chill down to earth guy.KT: Gives himself to the art…inspired to do art by skateboarding and PUNK! music, also NYC graffiti showcasing their work even though it’s not about making money.JESS: Piggy back! More into expression than money, using those cool techniques he learned from DIY Punk scenes.Gio: He’s the kinda guy who does what he wants…not about those NAYSAYER ART TEACHERS!ANNA: He’s BOLD! FEARLESS! Not scared of consequences. Dolpho: Thinking about those middle school kids with the OBEY sweaters and his work has a lot of value…but the clothing products don’t show that.Gio: YES! The message is diluted. ..

1970-

Page 30: Obey Shepard Fairey!

Shepard FaireyJess: He seems youngerJohn: He seems cool, since skateboarding and punk music inspired him. He wasn’t inspired by those traditional artists. Anesia: He was born in SC, where there wasn’t a graffiti scene…he found that in NYC. Excited that there was not a financial reward, but just PASSION. Michelle: Didn’t start off with aerosol spray cans…but a different approach.Kristen: He seems really humble still, even though his brand really took off. Despite his background at RISD, he doesn’t seem like he has special rights a prerogative to critique others. Rachel: “SHUT Skateboards” helped point him towards his aesthetics….maybe that’s the origin of OBEY clothing?

Gio: Saw it on TUMBLRRR, But it’s Fairey’s original, right?Syed: It was on someone’s home window.Alex: Is there a Charlie Sheen version of this? With the same color scheme?Janel: During the 2008 campaign, people thought it was pretty positive….We’ve got America’s colors…But was this the artist’s intentions? Anna: Very nationalistic KT: This represents that the world isn’t just black and white anymore…The words relate to Obama and what he’s trying to offer people. Janel: If the Campaign is hiring Fairey, they obviously respect him as an artist.

Propaganda:Some artwork that tries to get people to believe something.

ANGEL: “progress” can mean a lot of different things. Like this being the first Afro-American president Camila: What if Shepard Fairey is being ironic here? We always think that Presidents (in general) have made a lot of progress, we have HOPE…but in the end are they really?Tash: SO…The colors make it contradictory….it’s red white and blue but there’s no stars…Jess: HE’S THE STAR!! Visual representation gives off a certain idea or opinion…like PROPAGANDA. Rachel: In some of his clothing he uses “Obey Propaganda”

vs. (Shepard Fairey)

On February 4, 2009, the Associated Press announced that it determined "that the photograph used in the poster is an AP photo and that its use required permission."

In January 2009 photographer and blogger Tom Gralish discovered that the poster was based on an Associated Press photograph by freelance photographer Mannie Garcia.

Page 44: Obey Shepard Fairey!

vs.

On October 16, 2009, Fairey admitted that he had based the poster on the AP photograph and had fabricated and destroyed evidence on an old hard drive to hide the fact that he stole the image.

“I said, ok, I’ll pay the licensing fee it. And [the AP] said, no, we want to claim damages. I said damages? Because of my poster the Mannie Garcia picture is now worth more than it ever would have been.”

-Shepard Fairey

vs.The AP and Shepard Fairey settled out of court in January 2011. In a press release, the AP announced that the AP and Fairey "agreed to work together going forward with the Hope image and share the rights to make the posters and merchandise bearing the Hope image and to collaborate on a series of images that Fairey will create based on AP photographs. The parties have agreed to additional financial terms that will remain confidential."

OBEY Clothing was formed in 2001 as an extension of Shepard's range of work. Sales have slowly risen until 2009-2010 when they peaked, and have remained somewhat steady since.

Page 48: Obey Shepard Fairey!

Selling OBEY…Selling out?

Page 49: Obey Shepard Fairey!

Fairey steeps his ideology and iconography in self-empowerment. With biting sarcasm and reverse psychology, he goads viewers to “OBEY” so that they can be more aware of propagandistic people

that will bend the world to their own agendas.

How have you seen Shepard Fairey’swork change over the years?

• ZHENG: Started off with stickers on the street…but he got to work with OBAMA! Unlike Drake, he actually started from the bottom.

• Jess: He’s always been commercializing his work, making it widespread and well known…he hasn’t changed that much actually.

• Khiri: TOTES AGREE WITH JESS. Even though he commercialized his work, he started to orient himself around money more as the years went by.

• Janel: He started off as just a joke…but he’s elevated to being more sophisticated and respected. But he’s still a little childish.

• KT: He used to put himself more into his work, but now he’s commercializing OTHER people, not himself so much. What’s next?

• Anna: He’s not scared of authority no matter what happens. Kozak: #punkrockroots

• .

Page 51: Obey Shepard Fairey!

How have you seen Shepard Fairey’swork change over the years?

• Rachel: The Andre the Giant sticker was more random…but his work nowadays is more political and relevant to the time, responding to current issues.

• Anesia: TOTES AGREE. It started off kind of silly, but when he started becoming a commercial artist his work got a lot more serious.

• Steven: He hasn’t just written “OBEY” over the years, his work has more meaning, and multiple meanings.

• Angel: He has a 1-person approach with his work. In all his work there’s usually ONE PERSON in the work, almost like portraiture.

• John: His work started out black and white but he’s introduced new colors.

• .• .
