Taking the Library to the CommunityPromoting culture to make our communities stronger

North Ayrshire:
• High unemployment• Low investment• Poor transport links• Low (but improving) educational results• Lack of ambition?

Desire to improve opportunities for people in North Ayrshire through learning about their history and culture:
- Scottish Government (Public Library Excellence) funding
- Leader funding - aimed at local projects with a wide community benefit that show an element of originality or experimentation where possible, and complement other activities within the local development strategy.
Summary
The project helps communities and individuals to develop family and local history resources on the web.
These are created during:
• intergenerational (older and younger people working together) learning• family learning• adult and group learning in libraries and
and make these photographs and documents available to all.
This supports one of the National Outcomes in Scotland which states: “We have strong, resilient and supportive communities where people take responsibility for their own actions and how they affect others.”
Priorities for my department - Information and Culture - include:
• Developing personal and community participation (part of our national quality framework) – helping people to work together
• Improving the skills of communities in North Ayrshire, through supporting individuals and groups of volunteers
• Promoting family and intergenerational learning and relationships
Why?
• To build ICT skills among learners, staff and volunteers • To improve literacy skills among learners and volunteers• To encourage volunteers to take part learning in libraries
and communities• To create a legacy of digitised Internet resources for
communities to access from a range of locations, especially rural communities where access is difficult
Aims of the project include:
• To encourage a sense of local community in ethnic communities in North Ayrshire - Chinese, Sikh, Thai and Polish• To widen access to North Ayrshire’s heritage and history• To promote cultural activities within communities• To develop a working model to support creation of, access to and ongoing availability of the digitised resources, enabling ongoing contributions by individuals and communities.
Who is involved?
• Local history volunteers• Computer “buddy” volunteers• Learners in libraries (First Steps in ICT)• Family learners • Adult literacy learners learning to read and write• Elderly forum members• Learners who are learning to speak English• Homework club learners (after school, in libraries), volunteers
and parents• School pupils and teachers• Library and other staff
What are we placing on the Internet?
• Photographs, documents, archives, artefacts held currently at the Heritage Centre for which we hold copyright
• Additional resources identified and supplied by individuals and community groups for which they allowed the project copyright
What is the project delivering?
• A bank of digitised local and family history resources available on the web, via Flickr and Creative Commons, utilising social networking tools (Facebook, Twitter) to engage audiences and develop content
• An ICT model for the local creation of digitised photographs and documents by volunteers and learners
• An ICT model for the web based to help to store and find digitised photographs and documents created locally
• A suitable metadata standard for the tagging and retrieval of local history resources
• A keyword list, developed locally, utilising local Scots language expertise, for the North Ayrshire local and family collection
What is the project delivering?
• Costs and recommendations for similar projects• A transferable methodology for the development and support
of community groups and individuals to develop above resources
• Identification of training needs for staff and learners in similar projects
• A model for partnership protocols and roles for similar projects• Ongoing advice and support frameworks for other authorities
who wish to replicate/develop similar projects

Some examples of activities:
Family Learning: Dalry NurseryFamilies from Dalry Nursery visited the library as part of National Family Week where were introduced to the Library Service. Families and nursery staff were given the opportunity to learn how to digitise and upload photographs to Flickr.
Saltcoats Homework Club – worked with Museum to scan in images held in the museum. Over 4 weeks every group member visited museum twice. The group scanned and wrote descriptions of 20 images which have been uploaded to Flickr.
Kilwinning Elderly Forum – brought own photographs, scanned and wrote descriptions of images which are now on Flickr
