DESCRIPTION

In 2002, I was proud and privileged to be involved as a consultant supporting a team from the National College for School Leadership establishing a ground-breaking project called "Networked Learning Communities". The idea - years before social media tools were properly developed or understood - was to enable and harness online communities of teachers to support distributed learning. It was a project that was years ahead of its time and went on to great things. Details of the thinking behind the programme and its successes can be found at http://innovationunit.org/sites/default/files/From%20professional%20learning%20community%20to%20networked%20learning%20community.pdf and http://networkedlearning.ncsl.org.uk/collections/network-research-series/reports/how-networked-learning-communities-work.pdf The inspirational leader of the programme - David Jackson - can these days be found at the Innovation Unit at http://www.innovationunit.org In the meantime, this presentation - which I created to enthuse early participants in the programme during a get together at the Belfry in October 2002 - captures some of the early energy and passion created by the programme.

We and you are a project that is of its time…

We will use technology to help you where it can help, but we do not see ourselves as a technology project

You are rooted in communities with high degrees of social

capital and trustWe are looking to use video, narrative and oral capture as a key part of our knowledge

exchange process

You are the emerging new public sector

Page 16: Networked Learning Communities - an early social media communitarian trailblazer

You are leading the world…

No knowledge project of this scale is at this level of mature understanding

No knowledge project has such ensured activity from a distributed group for whom ‘knowledge’ has always been central to their profession

There will be huge interest and goodwill amongst the global community for this

initiative – we can harness that!

Many projects have detailed plans, but no vision. This project has a vision that has already

enthused people all over the country…

Over to you! Safe journey home…
