HNDs / FOUNDATION DEGREES AND TOP UP DEGREESWith qualifications designed around proven theoretical principles and courses led by academics with significant industry experience, at Northampton Business School you can be sure of a study programme that balances theoretical understanding with vocational application.

“I graduated from The University of Northampton with a

BA (Hons) Fashion Marketing in 2006. I really enjoyed

my course, especially the marketing focused modules

like retail and branding, which were comprehensive

and interesting. I left the University with some great

memories and a valuable qualification.

My degree has helped me to get an amazing job in the

fashion industry. I joined FULLCIRCLE, a London based

fashion house, in April 2007 as a Marketing Assistant.

I’ve always wanted to work in the fashion industry and

now I live in London, work for a great company and am

doing really well.”

Social enterprises can be defined as businesses of any scale or ownership that, as part of their central mission, meet a clear societal need either through their core activities, or which dedicates their profits to such a need, or both.

Social enterprise is increasingly being integrated across student courses at the University. The integration of social enterprise into teaching and learning and research throughout the University is based on the needs of our students.

Students will have the opportunity to complete accredited work placement modules with existing or start-up social enterprises. This will enable students to earn money, apply their skills to benefit regional social enterprises and significantly enhance their employability.

”It’s a good feeling to be able to put into play the skills learnt over my three year course by using them in real life situations. The course in Business Computing gave me a fantastic foundation to build upon within my current role and definitely gave me a head start in finding a job.”

No 1 for Value Added*‘Value Added’ is one of the most important categories for revealing how students succeed academically. The result is assessed by comparing students’ individual degree results with their entry qualifications out of a score of 10. This helps demonstrate the quality and effectiveness of teaching at an institution.

Pre-sessional English (ESL) For applicants who meet the academic entry qualifications but whose level of English is below that required for undergraduate BA/BSc degrees (IELTS 6.0) or postgraduate MA/MSc degrees (IELTS6.5) or equivalent. If you are not currently at this level this programme is for you. The programme is full-time with start dates in September, January, May and July. The length of the programme is dependent on your level of English at the time of entry and exit.

International Foundation Programme (IFP) For applicants whose school leaving qualification is not high enough for entry into a UK undergraduate course. Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be able to see a tutor if I need assistance?

Our friendly and approachable tutors are all easily accessible in the Cottesbrooke building. If you need to book an appointment

you can do so via our on-site reception or through email.

How much contact time will I get with my tutors?

You study six modules of two hours each per week giving 12 hours a week in class plus preparation and personal tutorials.

Will my course provide me with the stepping stones I need for a successful career?

We are a teaching orientated business school with time dedicated to our students. We don’t just teach you about your subject area, our

aim is develop successful professionals in that field. Our tutors have an impressive portfolio of commercial and academic experience and

links to professional bodies.

Is my course seen as relevant by employers?

We aim to keep our courses up-to-date and relevant by teaching to professional standards set by employer bodies such as those in

accounting, events, human resources, IT, management, marketing and tourism. Courses use visiting speakers, industry set briefs, and client

projects to maximise relevance to the workplace.

Can I take a work placement on my course?

Employers recognise the experience, maturity, and confidence gained from a work placement connected to your studies. All NBS single

and joint honours degrees come with the option of a one year placement which is taken in Year 3. Students make the decision to take

a placement during their second year of study. On some courses, students may be able to have their part-time work (provided it is a

suitable job) registered as part of an assessed Work Based Learning module. All Foundation degrees include Work Based Learning.

The NBS Centre for Employability (based within NBS) and the Careers Department provide ongoing support in job search, online

applications, CV writing and interview skills through timetabled modules and extra-curricular workshops.

How will I be assessed?

Module requirements differ but generally incorporate a mixture of assessment methods, for example: one course work assignment and

one two hour exam. Some modules require two pieces of course work (no exam). Coursework may be an individual report or a group

project. Occasionally you will need to do a presentation or present a seminar paper. Subjects such as accounting and IT will involve

practical assessments. Some courses use projects set by external clients and all degree courses require the completion of an independently

researched dissertation or project in the final year.

“During my placement year I developed a variety of new skills. I am a lot more confident when meeting people and have really improved my communicationand organisational skills. Having been in a work environment the theory I’d been learning now makes total sense and I have a variety of skills that I can use for my final year and dissertation.

I would describe my placement year as invaluable; I’ve paid off my student loan, gained lots of good friends and have job prospects.”
