GENRE OF MUSIC

Electronic Rock – One genre of music we thought about was electronic rock. This is a good genre to do, as there are lots of different ways we can show the style of music, through props, setting and costume etc.… Some of my favourite music is electronic rock and it is something I can relate to. This would be a good genre to create a music video for as there is lots I could do for it. I have lots of ideas for to use for this genre of music.

LIGHTING/EDITING/GENRE CONVENTIONS• Lighting – In most electronic rock music videos the main character(s) are always the

same as the rest of the people in the video. They all look equal and isn’t usually one stand our person. The rest of the shot is usually dark, with darker colours such as black and grey. Most of the videos, the people on screen are wearing darker clothes too.

• Editing – Most of the camera movements are on a tripod or dolly, which means the camera doesn’t move around too much. The main character or band don’t usually move around much either, therefore the camera doesn’t need to. There are usually lots of cut scenes too as well as fast montages going from scene to scene. Most of the shots used in the video studied are closer up shots, such as close ups, over the shoulder shots and extreme close up shots.

• Genre Conventions – You wouldn’t expect to see lots of movement in these videos. If the music video is of the band performing, they will usually be stood in a certain are, and only moving a little bit, within that area. However, some of this genres music videos aren’t of the band at all, it is more of a story of somebody else shown on screen.

SETTING/PROPS/ICONOGRAPHY• Setting - For the electronic rock song we looked at (SAIL) by Owalntation, the setting

was very relatable to what was in the lyrics. The setting is very lonely with the main character there on his own. This relates to the lyrics with what he says. This creates extra effect within the music video.

• Props – The props used within the video have to relate and mirror what is being said within the lyrics. As the lyrics talk about him giving up and being angry, the props used may get smashed up and beaten. This will show the anger of the main character in the music video.

• Iconography – Music videos for rock tend to be the complete opposite to pop videos. The colour scheme are usually a lot darker then the usual pop bright colours. Instead the images are gritty and dark, as this will relate to the lyrics. This is what you expect to see in a rock music video, therefore it’s iconic. An example of this is wearing dark clothes in a song which may represent depression.

• "This is how I show my love" – These lyrics are referring back to his ADD. He cannot show his love in any other way however people think he is weird or strange for showing it this way, but he cannot help it.

• "This is how an angel cries" - These lyrics are about the girl he likes. He can't show his love to her the way she wants him too. This is because of his mental disability. He is referring to the girl he likes as an angel, which shows how much he likes her.

• "Maybe I should cry for help" - This is showing he really doesn't know how to show his love and can't understand why she won't accept him. He thinks he may need help. He needs some advice on how to get her as it obviously isn’t working by himself.
