Organised by- The English DepartmentAbout the Society:The Hyderabad Karnataka Education Society was established in the year 1958 at Gulbarga for the realization of the dreams of late. Sri. Mahadevappa Rampure, the founder president. The society provides facilities for higher education in the faculties of Science, Arts, Commerce, Law, Medical, and Engineering etc to the people of that region. At present it runs 44 educational institutions from primary to post graduation in the various parts of Karnataka spreading from Bidar to Bangalore. The Society celebrated its Golden Jubilee in the year 2009, which was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble President of India Her Excellency Smt. Pratibha Devi Singh Patil.

About the College:

In Bangalore HKES Sree Veerendra Patil Degree College of Science started in the year1984.Subsequently Arts and Commerce were added in the year 1989 and BBM in the year 2005.The college is located in the prestigious locality of Sadashivanagar amidst a natural environment.

About the Workshop:

The Aim of the workshop is to enhance students of English language to be adequately equipped with the ability to communicate in English effectively. Teaching English language to the first generation learner has always been a challenge to a teacher. With technology playing a pivotal role in people’s lives today, it is only right to use Technology as one of the mediums of instruction. Using technology as a tool can develop an undeniable creativity in the vista of learning. Creativity breaks monotony. Traditional methods of teaching and learning, curbs creativity and interest. Oral communication without practical exposure will dull the spirit of learning in the longer run. Students of degree classes are talented and multi faceted and it is but right to provide them a varied learning process. A teacher of English is also faced with the challenge of providing such experiences to the students as the market demands. In the wake of a techno- savvy modern society, a graduate is expected to be equipped with the latest modes of communication and therefore education institutions should rise to the occasion. The workshop would, I believe trace different techniques to complement traditional class room teaching-learning through technology so as to provide them a rich learning experience.

It is an honour for our institution to host a National conference. The English Department has always been active in conducting various activities in pursuit of knowledge and excellence. The unstinted spirit of the head of the department is appreciable. Conducting a national conference is quite a herc ulean task. Macquillin has never at any given point in time as shown reluctance in this endeavour. Hence I congratulate her efforts and also the staff who willingly gave her the support to make this a grand success.

FOREWARD

Much of the economic success of Europe relies on its strength as leader in many technology driven industries. This favourable position has often been created and shaped by technology orientated entrepreneurial endeavours. Having an excellent educational program for students is indispensable for the future well-being of their economy.

However, the recent development of the world has shown that having the skills to adapt to a changing environment has become more important. Therefore, creating awareness about and stimulating interest in engineering a student is an important issue for the leadership of educational institutions across Europe. Thus, in India the challenge for universities alike is to ensure that such topics are addressed as in ensuring best in class technology education and mobilizing the entrepreneurial spirit. This involves a multitude of demanding questions. For example, finding the right positioning of universities and connecting programmes across partner institutions. In addition, enhancing the connection and exchange of science i.e. multimedia technology and practice promises to create much more synergies if sustainable operating models are found. Nonetheless, many language teachers struggle to integrate these new technologies into their teaching: professional development, institutional leadership, and curriculum design issues may hamper efforts to incorporate technologies into otherwise everyday instructional practices. Why does the use of technologies in the classroom, in general, tend to present such a formidable challenge? One reason may be that the techniques and technologies in face-to-face instruction need greater emphasis and acknowledgement.

Clearly, the blending of technologies into language learning is complex, and it involves a range of internal and external influences (Oxford&Jung, 2007).A decade after the push to implement

educational technologies began throughout higher education, cyclical models now show us that successful integration involves factors that include time commitment, competence development, course design, teaching experiences and reflections. (Moser, 2007).

Therefore this workshop on Multimedia Technology attempts to find that space wherein such deliberations on prospects and perspectives on the said topic can be had. A sincere attempt has been made by the organisers of this workshop to bring in Resource persons from varied fields like academics, corporate trainers, business tycoons, e-learning and digital experts, technologists and engineers to provide the delegates with their experience and expertise. I believe the delegates themselves are a rich source of knowledge that together we can arrive in the next two days, synergies with sustainable operating models.

The Inaugural Function

The UGC Sponsored National Workshop was inaugurated on 26th September 2014 at 10.00am.After the traditional lighting of the lamp was by the dignitaries , chief-guest. Smt. B. Kamalamma, Joint Director, Key-Note speaker, dr. Etienne Rassendren, St. Joseph’s College, Bangalore, Retd. Professor. Sri S.K. Seeri, former Principal, HKES SVP Degree College, Dr. Lazer Selva, Professor, Loyala College, Chennai, Dr. Gayatri Natraj, Principal HKES SVP Degree College and Dr. Macquillin Christine.D., HOD English Department, Organising Secretary of the workshop. Smt. Gunashri, Department of Computer Science , rendered the invocation song. Principal of the institution Dr. Gayatri Natraj, welcomed the gathering. She expressed her happiness in conducting such a workshop and also she mentioned that her support and encouragement would be with the team. She also wished the participants a great and fruitful time for the next two days.

Chief-Guest, B. Kamalamma, Joint Director- Collegiate Education gave the inaugural address. She said that such activities at the tertiary level can bridge the gap between the industries and the institutions. She reiterated the fact the employers seek for employability of the candidates rather than the regular degree certificates. A structured and skill development programme should blend with the degree course can benefit the students greatly. A teacher she said should leave no stone unturned, to provide the latest and technology imbibed learning in their classrooms. Institutions should encourage and co-operate with the teachers to provide the means by which such activities should be conducted in all the departments. She congratulated the Principal, the organising Secretary, and staff for organising such an event. She also wished the team and the participants all the best.

Dr. Etienne Rassendren, Key-note speaker, began his debate on how ready we as teachers ready to take up the bridging of tradition vs latest innovation. His observations made during his deliberations were from Shakespeare and a Kannada movie were in Dr. Rajkumar, speaks about the colour and beauty of a woman. Both the versions were integrated and a video clipping to explain the facts was overwhelming. He did not hesitate to say that very few teachers are truly working in bringing life in a class room. Such presentations and exposure to different ideas through videos and audios can attract the attention of the learner and enhance learning possibilities. At this juncture he asked the participants if they would even call themselves as

‘facilitators’ rather than a teacher as he said a ‘classroom’ itself portrays a colonial mindset. There was commitment and clarity in his talk as he took the participants through various facets of our own history, language and the present scenario.

The presidential remark was made by the guest-of honour, Professor. S.K. Seeri, former Principal of HKES SVP Degree College. He was very honoured at the prospect of seeing such an array of speakers and participants from various states. H e did patronise with the speakers and expressed the fact that teachers should also change their techniques as per the time and should never be backward in any approach that the other countries have adapted. The time and commitment of a teacher will always be rewarded in the form of personal satisfaction. He wished the team and the participants’ success.

Vote of Thanks was given by Prof. Padma Jyoti, English Department, HKES SVP Degree College. After the inauguration and tea-break, the Resurce persons took over. The speakers of the first day brought out various approaches to teaching and learning, the expert and experienced speakers brought with them the expertise of technology that brought out the curiosity and active participation of the participants. The Resource persons gave them the platform to learn and practice various techniques . The practical training ws given by the expert engineers and resource persons to shoot a lecture, selecting the right kind of equipments, the different forms of slide preparations’ and videos was very profitable. This was truly a workshop that enabled a teacher to learn using all his senses. The feed-back received at the end of the workshop spoke volumes of the choice of the Resource persons. Paper presentation continued on both the days. About 20 participants presented the papers. The delegates themselves has dealt with such wide variety of topics that brought forth a lot of discussions and ideas that proved beneficial.

The Valedictory Function:

On 27th September 2014, at 4.00 pm , valedictory was arranged by Sri. Dayanithi, CEO, Monalisa group of companies, was the chief guest. His rich exposure to industry gave him the expertise of the need that the industry requires among the young graduates of today. His observations, that a teacher cannot be replaced, but should be a facilitator to provide the latest techniques the students require were accepted in the right spirit by the participants. His observations about the sessions on both the days made him feel satisfied that the workshop has indeed paved way for a new and a meaningful teaching and learning experience. No student should be left undone at the end of his education. His focus was on the right kind of education that is required in the present scenario, with quality which should never be compromised, high moral values, principled code of conduct which will provide a healthy, meaningful life and society.

Due to the unavoidable circumstances the President of HKE Society could not be present. The presidential remark was given by Srikantachar, Mysore. He congratulated the organisers for such an elaborate and well organised workshop. He too reiterated the fact that as teachers of the new generation of learners, we should learn to equip ourselves with the latest developments in technology. A teacher can never stop learning. With this attitude and the right approach to teaching, education can definitely be rewarding. Certificates were distributed to all the delegates. Vote of thanks was proposed by the organising secretary, Dr. Macquillin Christine. D. She expressed her gratitude to UGC, for sanctioning funds and encouraging the faculty to conduct such academic and intellectual activities. Thanking the management, principal, staff, participants, Resource persons and all those who co-operated in conducting the workshop successfully. The workshop was enlightening and satisfying. A light cultural programme was presented by the students of HKE SVP Degree College. A meaningful street play and traditional dance were the highlight of the programme.
