Mountainous Landforms

- are those that rise higher than the rest of their surroundings.

- exhibit slopes, summit areas and local reliefs.

- they can be created by different tectonic activities.

Volcanoes

• Are landforms that are controlled by geological processes that form them and continually act on them after their formation

Anak Krakatau in Indonesia

Volcanoes• The volcano’s cone-

shaped structure or edifice is carved out by the more or less symmetrical accumulation of lava and other pyroclastic materials around it’s central vent system

Hills• are elevated portions of

land that are formed by geologic activities such as faulting

• usually covered with grass and are used as grazing lands for goats, cattle and carabaos

• Smaller than mountainsChocolate Hills in Bohol

Page 6: Mountainous and glacial landforms

Hills

• During dry season, the green grasses covering the hills turn brown making the landforms appear like thousands of chocolate hills

Valley

• Also called as Dale is a low area between hills, often with a river running through it.

• Shapes of Valleys– V-shaped Valley– U-shaped Valley

Ifugao Valley

Valley• A valley formed

by flowing water, or river valley, is usually V-shaped. The exact shape will depend on the characteristics of the stream flowing through it.

Valley

• A tunnel valley is a large, long, U-shaped valley originally cut under the glacial ice near the margin of continental ice sheets such as that now covering

Glacial Landforms

- results of the actions of the glaciers.- are huge slow-moving bodies of ice.- created by the movement of large

ice sheets during the Quaternary Glaciations

- Two types of Glaciers:1. Alpine2. Continental

Page 11: Mountainous and glacial landforms

Continental Glaciers

• Continental Glaciers are formed in cold polar regions

Page 12: Mountainous and glacial landforms

Alpine Glaciers

•Alpine Glaciers are formed in high mountains

Page 13: Mountainous and glacial landforms

Plateaus• Also known as table lands

or flap-topped mountains• Are portions of land

elevated thousands of feet above surroundings

• They are the results of geologic uplifts or the slow movement of large parts of stable areas of Earth’s crust

Plateaus

• Causes of formations of Plateaus–Volcanic

Eruptions–Weathering

Page 15: Mountainous and glacial landforms

Plateaus

• covers about 45% of Earth’s land surface

• low plateaus are often used for farming

• high plateaus are suitable for livestock grazing
