Figure skating when the early people lived consisted of the people skating across the ice with bones attached to the soles of their feet.

When people consider men’s skating, they usually think of speed skating or hockey, but it is also very common for men to figure skate.

Some famous Olympic men figure skaters include Patrick Chen and David Delletier.

Men’s figure skating includes pairs, singles, groups , spins, jumps, footwork and other challenging movements on ice.

JumpsJumps play a very important part in figure skating. Some jumps include: Salchow - perform a three-turn, then stop, free-foot extended back, and bring

free leg around in a swooping motion, then jump in the air and land on the leg that performed the swooping.

Toe loop - skate backward on an outside edge, pick (when you jab your toe into the ice) with the opposite toe, jump a half revolution in the air and land on the foot that did not perform the picking.

Waltz jump – start on a forward outside edge, perform a half revolution in the air, and land on the opposite foot’s outside edge.

Loop – start on a back outside edge, then jump a full revolution in the air and land on the same back outside edge.

Flip – skate backward on the back inside edge, pick with the opposite foot, jump a full revolution in the air and land on the foot that performed the picking.

Lutz – perform exactly like a flip, but begin on the back outside edge instead of the back inside edge.

Axel – begin on the forward outside edge, jump forward, perform one and a half revolution in the air, and land on opposite foot and on back outside edge.

History The exact time at which people started to figure skate is

unknown. Figure skating began by people attaching bones to the bases of

their feet. This was very handy for crossing vast stretches of ice when needed, since it was much faster than walking.

Bone-figure skates were found as archaeological evidence in Russia, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Germany, and Switzerland.

The first evidence of figure skating was found in a book written by William Fitzstephen, about Thomas Beckett. The following passage was the evidence:

“...if the moors in Finsbury and Moorfield freeze over, children from London play. Some of the children have attached bones to their ankles, and carry well-worn sticks. They fly across the ice like birds, or well-fired arrows. Suddenly, two children will run at each other, sticks held high in the air. They then attack each other until one falls down. Often, the children injure their heads or break their arms or legs...” By William Fitzstephen.

PairsPairs figure skating is when one man and one women skate together.

Pair skaters perform the same movements as singles figure skaters, but in sync with each other.

Some examples for pairs include: Tatiana Volosozhar and Stanislav Morozov, Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolko
