History

• MeeGo is a Linux-based open source mobile operating system which is designed to act as an operating system for hardware platforms such as mobile phones, net book , tablets, and connected TVs infotainment system.

• It Was first announced at Mobile Word Congress in Feb 2010 by Intel and Nokia in joint press conference.

• The stated aim is to merge the efforts of Intel’s Moblin and Nokia’s Meamo former projects into one new common project. i.g “MeeGo”

• In May 2010 MeeGo 1.0 releases core OS(N900 +AI) Net book UX

• On 21 June 2011, Nokia announced its first MeeGo/Harmattan v1.2 smartphone device, Nokia N9

Maemo + Moblin

• Maemo is a software plateform developed by Nokia for Smartphone's and internet tablets Which is based on Debian Linux distribution.

• Moblin (mobile Linux) is inlets open source mobile operating system and application for Mobile internet devices(MIDs),net books etc..

What is Use of MeeGo ?MeeGo unifies Moblin and Maemo and supports arange of target platforms, including:

−Netbooks

−Handsets

− Connected TVs

− In-Vehicle Infotainment devices

Difference Between MeeGo and Android

• MeeGo and Android both are open sourced Linux based smart phone operating system.

• Android project is currently carried out by Google and MeeGo is carried out by Intel and Nokia as a joint venture.

• Android already have a huge application market having more than 200,000 applications whereas in MeeGo is currently under development. But some of the Nokia OVI apps and Intel AppUp will run on MeeGo.

• Android already captured considerable mobile market and MeeGo is still under development and not released for commercial use

Benefits

Benefits to the Linux Platform:-• Meego is helpful for Linux as a platform as it combines

mobile development resources that were recently split in the Maemo and Moblin projects into one well-supported project.

Benefits to Application Developers:-• Meego significantly expands the market opportunities.

Benefits to Operators:-• Meego enables differentiation through user interface

customization.
