My Music Magazine Pitch

Initial Ideas• My idea is an independent magazine which combines music and film and talks about bands, artists and

genres that are usually less talked-about. My magazine will also cover old, as well as new; looking at music history and lesser known facts about classic albums and bands and how iconic albums came to be.

• It will focus mainly on young people who want to find out about new film and music releases whilst keeping in touch with older, influential content. Although it will be aimed mainly at teenagers; due to the content it could appeal to a large secondary audience such as adults that want to remember film and music from their younger years but also want to stay in touch with new releases.

• My magazine could also contain content based around unsigned bands and artists and indie film makers to try and give well-deserved creators the recognition they normally wouldn’t receive with institutional magazines.

• It will also talk about influential directors and bands and possibly how to create basic films and music yourself.

Audience ProfilingMy target audience will be between the ages of 16-25 as it will mainly focus on up-coming or lesser known artists as well as less talked about genres like alternative and electronic/dance music. However there will also be content based on some older classic albums and bands like Nirvana. There will also be articles about films, both old and new. This will appeal to young people (teens) who enjoy finding out about new media but also not forgetting about old classic albums and films. I could also link newer bands to older, more established recognisable bands and show how they inspired the newer ones. My magazine will also contain a broad range of genres and sub genres however will often cover alternative/indie genres along with rock. However it may also appeal to some adults who like to reminisce but also keep up to date. It will be a magazine for more of a niche audience, containing less relevant classic media and new, underground music. My audience will mainly have been educated in public education and be students. The magazine ‘Rolling Stone’ often covers old and new music along with film and T.V series reviews; although my magazine will focus on creating content for younger people.

Institution• ‘The wire’ is an independent monthly magazine founded in 1982. It covers

a broad range of genres including electronic and rock. It is run by a small, dedicated team rather than a large institution and looks for new music ‘in and between genres.’ There is also no set agenda for the magazine so they are open to new concepts and ideas. It even states that it seeks out undervalued bands and artists and also covers music old and new. They investigate music’s history, not just current news and future speculation. The staff themselves also own the magazine so no advertisers or music labels dictate their content. They may be interested in distributing my magazine as it focuses on the younger auidence.

Magazine Style• A possibility for central image on my cover is to have an iconic album or film placed next to a newer lesser

known album, band or film to clearly represent what my magazine is about: Old and new.• Black and white with more vivid colours such as red and yellow to create a dynamic contrast and it also

represents the content as black and white could mirror the older sections while the brighter colours could represent the new. However there is also some cross over as some of the new albums, such as the XX is black and white while the older film Pulp Fiction is red and yellow. Whatever the case, my magazine’s colour palette will Reflect the content and mood.

Names• Rock and Rolling- Although my magazine covers a wide range of genres it will often focus on classic

rock albums, albeit different sub genres of rock, and the rolling is a play on words as it fits as the phrase and genre rock and roll but it also makes use of the film term ‘Rolling’ when the cameras start filming. It also gives the magazine a sense of movement-’Rolling’ is present tense which keeps with the theme of finding new creativity all the time. It combines the old and new concepts and connotes a sense of fun. I would include pictures to make it clear that the ‘rolling’ is referring to films.

Magazine’s Content• My magazine will contain information, reviews of, and interviews with unfamiliar bands and artists as well

as facts about iconic albums and films, such as mistakes, processes and ideas that led to the creation of them. Along with this it will have some updates on the latest music and film releases along with reviews of them; from professional reviewers but also from readers of the magazine which you can apply to write about.

Double Page Spread• My double page spread will either focus on a lesser known artist to get them recognised or an article on a

more well known band and their inspiration from older, influential bands. The double page will have on main, large image and possibly a couple of secondary, but I don’t want to make it seem cluttered. I want a clear, organised layout that is pleasing to look at as well as to read.
