UCLA had over 55,000 freshmanapplicants and announced that theywere only accepting 12,098 students.Among them were 175 student bodypresidents; more than 150 National APScholars; 400 most valuable players intheir sports; nearly 900 outstandingmusicians; almost 300 EagleScouts and Girl Scout leaders; morethan 200 black belts in various martialarts; some 500 Science Olympians;about 500 recipients of book awardsfrom Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Princetonand other universities; more than 150Model United Nations delegates; morethan 150 recipients of Rotary YouthLeadership Awards; and 3,000 whoindicated they were captains of theirsports or academic teams.
