Who We Are
Private nonprofit 501c3 founded in 1963
Dedicated to helping adults learn to read, write and speak English
Since 1963 we have helped 10,000 adults in Montgomery County to change their lives
What We Offer
Basic Literacy tutoring (reading and writing)
English as a Second Language tutoring (reading, writing, and speaking)
Independent computer-assisted learning in our Language Lab
Conversation classes
How It Works We train volunteers to tutor one-on-one or with small
groups of students who live or work in Montgomery County.
We provide all books at no charge to tutor or student.
We provide ongoing support for the most positive volunteer experience.
Volunteer Tutor ExpectationsAs a Literacy Council Volunteer Tutor, you will:
Meet with your student(s) two hours per week; Enjoy flexible volunteering by setting your own schedule and tutoring
location to meet with your student(s); Make a direct impact on your community while gaining new skills for
yourself!
No Teaching Experience?
Prospective tutors need NO prior experience in education. You need only to be fluent in English yourself and have the desire to pass
those skills along to another person. We kindly request a one-year minimum commitment.
What Kind of Person Volunteers for the
Literacy Council? Our volunteers come from many different walks of life and include
students, retirees, homemakers, and full- and part-time workers.
