Landscape Photography

Landscape Experiments

Caleb Knowles

Within my work I have planned five different styles on which to focus my Unit 25 work upon. The five methods I have chosen are:Water ReflectionsLayers/ColorsLight TrailsGolden Hour HDRWith each of these methods, I plan to come up with at least 3-5 photographs to work from which could prove challenging as I have to take the photographs at different times of day and therefore I can only do them on weekends & holidays.

Water Reflections

ISO: 100

Shutter speed: 1/100 sec

Aperture: 5.6

With this photograph I am generally pleased as I managed to use depth to my advantage as there is a foreground which leads you into the shot, and I successfully managed to capture a clear reflection of the bridge, making a circle effect.

The only thing I would really change about this image is that I would crop it slightly at the bottom to make the image slightly more landscape.

Layers/Colors

ISO: 100

Shutter Speed: 1/800 sec

Aperture: 5.6

Overall, I know that these two photos are not the best attempts at layers & colors, but they still have their own individual effects.

The top image has the color effect of the yellow field blending with the green trees, and this also links towards the layering of the various hills in the background. The main problem with this image is that for one, it is quite bland, and the two telephone wires are distractions to the rest of the image.

Light Trails

ISO: 100

Shutter Speed: 8.0

Aperture: 10

Granted, I dont have a lot of light trail images to use as examples, however I do have this one that is quite far away from the light trails themselves, however there is still a lot going on within this image that fills in the gaps and makes this an effective landscape image.

Therefore I think that this is still a successful image and I am pleased with it although in the future with other light trail images, I would like them to be closer and if possible, include a bit more depth.

Golden Hour

IS0: 100

Shutter Speed: 1/25 sec

Aperture: 8 This image was taken at around 67am of the sunrise within a collection of trees, creating the variety of colors that mainly consist of the red and orange of the fallen leaves, the green of the grass, and the shadows create by the golden sun.

I think that this image was a good attempt and the tree does actually create a good effect, but it is taking up a lot of room within the photo so if I try this again, I would take the photo at a slightly different angle to move the tree to the left.

High Dynamic Range

ISO: 100

Shutter Speed: 1/130 sec

Aperture: 5.6

With the main image above, I tried to experiment with involving depth within a HDR image and also to make none-landscape subjects into landscapes by themselves.

Personally I dont think that it was fully successful as you can still see its surroundings, but seen as this was an experiment it doesnt have any major impact on my work. However I think I was successful in obtaining a sense of depth within the image itself.
