SIGNIFICANCE,BENEFITS, SIGNS, DUA

1-We have indeed revealed this (Message) in the night of Power: 2-And what will explain to you what the Night of Power is?3-The Night of Power is better than a thousand Months. 4-Therein come down the angels and the Spirit by Allah's permission on every errand: 5-Peace!... This until the rise of Morning!

Reason of Revelation• The Messenger of Allah (SAW) mentioned about 4

worshippers of Allah amongst Israelites. • They worshipped Allah (SAW) for 80 years and did not

disobey Him even equal to blinking of eye. • They were: Ayyub (AS), Zechariah (AS), Ezekiel (AS), Yusha

(AS).• Companions were very surprised • Gabriel (AS) came and said, “ Your companions expressed

surprise at their worship. Allah has revealed (Lailatul Qadar) better than what they had.

• Prophet (SAW) and companions were very pleased. (Ibn Abi Hatem, Ibn Katheer.)

Meaning of Lailatul Qadar

• 1-Qadar means honor.Imam Zuhri says this night is given this name

because of its honorAbu-Bakr Warraq says it is called night of Qadar

bacause one who had no value due to inaction, now became honorable due to ibadah in this night

• 2- Qadar also means destiny- In this night, whatever destiny is written for people by Allah, its portion for this year is handed over to the angels to implement those decsions.

3-Qadr means constriction• Qadr means constriction, in the sense that the

knowledge of precisely when this night is, is hidden.

• Al-Khaleel ibn Ahmad said: it was called Laylat al-Qadr because the earth is constricted by the great numbers of angels on that night

• Allah says :

• “But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life …” [al-Fajr 89:16], i.e., by constricting or reducing his provision.

Three Points From the Tafseer

• 1-Quran revealed in Laylatul-Qadar: Allah says: We revealed it (Qran) in Laylatul-Qadar.

• Scholars say, based on other ahadith, that it means Allah revealed the Qur’an, in totality, to Baytul-Izza, a secure place on first heaven.

• From there, Jibreel (AS) would bring it down piecemeal to Rasulullah (SAW) as willed by Allah (SWT).

• Another meaning is that the revelation began in the night of Qadar.

2- Angels descend upon earth (Ibn Katheer)• Allah (SWT) commands Jibraeel (AS) on this night to

descend with angels. • He descends with a green flag which he puts on Kaaba.• Angels send their salutations to all those who are

engaged in slaah, zikr, recitation of Quran and say Amen on their duas

• They leave in the morning.• They ask Jibrael(AS) how did Allah (SWT) deal with

Ummah of Mohammad (SAW). • Jibrael (AS) responds,” He looked at them with Mercy

and forgave everyone except 4 kinds of people.”

4 kinds of people not forgiven on this night

1- Drinks alcohol ( uses intoxicants)2- Disobedient to one’s parents

3- Severer of blood relations

4- Keeping ill will against others in his heart

3- Salaam or peace• Some explain that Allah does not decree anyone going into

Hellfire on this day. • Others explain that Allah will not cause any earthquakes,

plagues, or other natural disasters on this day. • Angels bring messages and decisions of peace (Tafseer

Mazhari)• Shaytan cannot do any evil or cause any harm on this

night, as Mujahid said. (See Tafsir Ibn Katheer, 4/531). • On this night, many people are saved from punishment

because of what they do to worship Allah, may He be glorified.

The significance of lailatul Qadr (The night of Decree)

• Holy Quran was sent down in this night• Every decreed matter for the year is conveyed to

angels as mentioned in Surah Qadar. • Ibadah in this night is equal in reward to ibadah in

one thousand months• Angels descend down led by Jibrael who say peace

to all believers• Allah’s Mercy and forgiveness is bestowed upon

those who worship Him sincerely• Peace and blessings of Allah (SWT) descend upon

the believers

1-Holy Quran was sent down in this night

• The revelation of the Qur'an therein is a proof to its status and virtue

• Allah, the Glorious, revealed therein the greatest type of Dhikr and the most honorable book.

• By reciting the Qur'an, you shall gain one of the greatest reasons of guidance and piety.•

2-In this night is decreed every matter of ordainments." (Dukhan: 44,4)

• Precise commands relating to the livings of people and their deaths are separated from Al Lawh-ul-Mahfuzh (the Preserved Tablet) to the angels —who record all matters of people

• Examples of such commands are : sustenance, actions, events, and ages— up to the next year

• These pre destined matters are commanded by Allah's Knowledge, Wisdom, and Ability; and that indicates the high status of this night.

3-Night of Al-Qadr (Decree) is better than a thousand months

• Worshipping Allah in this night is better than worshipping Him a thousand months, i.e. 83 years and 4 months)." [Surat Al Qadr: 3].

• This Ayah shows the virtue of performing Qiyam and the great reward for actions in that night.

• If the rewards of good actions are doubled in Ramadan, how about performing these actions in Laylat-ul-Qadr?

• None but Allah knows the reward that is given to the person who performs Qiyam in that night out of faith and hoping for the reward of Allah.

4-Angels come down to the earth

• "Therein descend the angels and the Rûh [Jibrîl (Gabriel)] by Allâh's Permission with all Decrees. * (All that night), there is Peace (and Goodness from Allâh to His believing slaves) until the appearance of dawn." [Surat Al Qadr: 4 – 5)

• Therefore, it is a reassuring night, in which many people are freed of torment, and many people are helped to obey their Forgiving Lord who accepts repentance.

5- Ibadah of this night brings forgiveness of all previous sins

One deprived of its goodness is truly depived

• Imam Ahmad recorded from Abu Hurayrah: “When Ramadan would come, the Messenger of Allah (SAW) would say: ‘Verily, the month of Ramadan has come to you all. It is a blessed month, which Allah has obligated you all to fast.

• During it the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are shackled.

• In it there is a night that is better than one thousand months. Whoever is deprived of its good, then he has truly been deprived.'” (Ahmad)

When is Lailatul-Qadr?• It is known from the Hadith that the exact

knowledge of when Lailatul Qadr falls was taken because some people argued. Ubaadah ibn as-Saamit (R.A) said:

• “The Prophet (P.B.U.H) came out intending to tell us about Lailatul-Qadr, however two men were arguing and he said: “I came out to inform you about Lailatul-Qadr but so and so, and, so and so were arguing, so it was raised up, and perhaps that is better for you, so seek it on the (twenty) ninth and (twenty) seventh and the (twenty) fifth.” (Bukhari)

Knowledge of exact date was removed

• Also it is reported from the Prophet (SAW) that:• “Verily I saw Lailatul Qadr, and I was caused to

forget it, and indeed it is during the last ten (nights). It is during an odd night”

• Allah concealed that night from His Servants out of mercy so that they would increase their acts of worship and gain the great reward by performing Qiyam during these blessed nights, thinking that each night is Laylat-ul-Qadr.•

27th or 29th of Ramadan

• Imam Ahmad also recorded from Abu Hurayrah (RA) that the Messenger of Allah  عليه الله صلى

وسلم :said about the Night of Al-Qadr وآله•  “Verily, it is during the twenty-seventh or the

twenty-ninth night. And verily, the angels who are on the earth during that night are more numerous than the number of pebbles.”

Date of Qadr moves from year to year• At-Tirmidhi recorded from Abu Qilabah that he said, “The Night of Al-Qadr moves around (i.e., from year to year) throughout the last ten nights.”

• This view is also recorded by Malik, Ath-Thawri, Ahmad bin Hanbal, Ishaq bin Rahuyah, Abu Thawr, Al-Muzani, Abu Bakr bin Khuzaymah and others.

• It has also been related from Ash-Shafi`i, and Al-Qadi reported it from him, and this is most likely. And Allah knows best.

Seek it in the last 9-10 nights of Ramadan• It is narrated by Aisha (R.A):• “Allah’s Messenger (SAW) used to

practice Itikaaf in the last ten nights and say: ‘Seek out Lailatul-Qadr in the (odd nights) of the last ten days of Ramadan.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

• It is reported from Ibn Umar (RA):• “Allah’s Messenger (SAW) said:

“Seek it in the last ten, and if one of you is too weak or unable then let him not allow that to make him miss the final seven.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

PROPHET ‘S IBADAH IN LAST 10 DAYS OF RAMADAN

Signs of Lailatul Qadr• The Messenger of Allah  وسلم وآله عليه الله صلىalso said: “Verily, the sign of the Night of Al-Qadr is:

• It is pure and glowing as if there were a bright, tranquil, calm moon during it.

• It is not cold, nor is it hot, and • No shooting star is permitted until morning. • Its sign is that the sun appears on the morning

following it smooth having no rays on it, just like the moon on a full moon night.

• Shaytan is not allowed to come out with it (the sun) on that day.” (Ahmed)

More ahadith on signs of Lailatul Qadar

• Ubayy ibn Ka’b (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW) announced that one of its signs was that when the sun rose on the following morning, it had no (visible) rays. (Muslim)

• Ibn Abbas reported that Prophet (SAW) said,“Laylat al-Qadr is a pleasant night, neither hot nor cold, and the following day the sun rises red and weak.” (Saheeh Ibn Khuzaymah, 2912; Musnad al-Tayaalisi).

• Waathilah ibn al-Asqa’ (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW) said: “Laylat al-Qadr is a bright night, neither hot nor cold, in which no meteors are seen.” (Narrated by al-Tabaraani in al-Kabeer. See Majma’ al-Zawaa’id, 3/179; Musnad Ahmad).

Lailatul Qadar can help us achieve high ideals• Everyone of us would like to live a life free of sins and free

of mistakes. • Everyone would like to meet Allah on the Day of Judgment

without sins. • Every one of us would like to feel that he/she is reborn

today. • All of us wish to rejuvenate ourselves, and to start a new

year with a fresh outlook and a fresh life. • Every one of us wants to live a pure life and everyone wants

to purify himself/herself without anguish or torment. • The Night of Power is one of the best ways in which a

person is to achieve all these ideals

Things to do in Lailatul Qadar

• 1. RECITE THE QURAN ABUNDANTLY• Laylatul Qadr is the night the Qur’an was revealed

so we should spend much of the night reciting it for we will gain 700 hasanah or more by reciting each letter!

• 2. STRIVE TO GAIN FORGIVENESS• One should strive and do their utmost to gain the

mercy of Allah especially in the odd numbered nights of the last ten days. If one leaves Ramadan without gaining the mercy of Allah then surely they are the most unfortunate ones and are the biggest losers in this world and the next.

Things to do in Lailatul Qadar• 3. DO MUCH SUPERAGATORY (NAFL) IBADAH ON THIS

NIGHT• Rabi’ah ibn Malik al-Aslami reported that the Prophet

sallallahu alehi wasallam said: “Ask (anything).” Rabi’ah said: “I ask of you to be your companion in paradise.” The Prophet said: “Or anything else?” Rabi’ah said: “That is it.” The Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said to him: “Then help me by making many prostrations (i.e., supererogatory prayers).” (Muslim)

•

Here are some Nafil prayers we can pray on Laylatul Qadr• 1. Two Rakat after performing Wudu (Ablution)

Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that the Prophet (SAW) said to Bilal (RA): “Tell me about the best of your deeds  since your embracing Islam because I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise.” Bilal (RA) replied: “I do not consider any act of mine more rewarding than that whenever I make ablution at any time of night or day, I perform Prayer for as much as was destined for me to do.” ( Bukhari and Muslim)”

• 2. Tahajjud• Imam Abu Sa’id al-Khadimi said,• “There is scholarly consensus (ijma`) that among the best of virtuous acts is

the night vigil prayer.” [al-Bariqa al-Mahmudiyya Sharh al-Tariqa al-Muhammadiyya]

•  1. Its optimal recommended amount is 8 rakats, because this was the general practice of the Messenger of Allah (SAW). [ Fath al-Qadir]

•  2. Lengthier recitation is superior to a larger number of rakats prayed. [Durr al-Mukhtar, Radd al-Muhtar]

3- Zikr• We should glorify Allah night and day, especially in the last odd nights.• Here are some easy and very beneficial Dhikr and glorification we can do throughout the last ten odd

nights:• 1. Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘annee• 2. Subhanallah• 3. Alhamdulillah• 4. Allahu Akbar• 5. Laa ilaha ilallah• 6. LA HAWLA WA LA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAH• 7. Asthaghfirullah• 8. SUB-HAN’ALLAH HIL AZEEM WA BI-HAM’DIHI,• 9. Subhāna-llāhi, wa-l-hamdu li-llāhi, wa lā ilāha illā-llāhu, wa-llāhu akbar. Wa lā hawla wa lā quwwata

illā bi-llāhi-l-aliyyi-l-azīm• 10. Lā ilāha illā-llāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lahu lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-ḥamdu yuhyi wa yumītu wa

huwa ḥayyu-llā yamūtu abadan abada, ḏū-l-jalāli wa-l-ikrām, biyadihi-l-khayr, wa huwa alā kulli Shay-in qadīr

• Or the shortened version:• 11. Laa ilaaha illal-laahu wahdahu laa shareeka lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu wa huwa ‘alaa kulli

shay-in qadeer• One should also recite the salutation upon the Prophet (SAW) that one recites in one’s Salaah

4. Make much dua

• We should be very busy in Dua as much as we can especially in the last 10 odd numbered.

• Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an:• “When my servants ask you concerning me, (tell them) I am indeed close (to them). I listen to the prayer of every suppliant when he calls on me.” [2:186]

• The place of duaa is so high to Allah, that the Prophet(SAW) had said: “Nothing is more honourable to Allah the Most High than du`a.” [Sahih al-Jami` no.5268].

• Almighty Allah also said: “The most excellent worship is du`a.” [Sahih Al-Jami` no. 1133]

Qiyaamul Lail• Abu Zar (RA) relates: "We fasted with Allah's Messenger (SAW) in

Ramadhan. He did not lead us (in qiyaam) at all until there were seven (nights of Ramadhan) left.

• Then he stood with us (that night - in prayer) until one third of the night had passed.

• He did not pray with us on the sixth. • On the fifth night, he prayed with us until half of the night had

passed. • So we said, 'Allâh's Messenger! Wouldn't you pray with us the whole

night?' He replied:• 'Whoever stands in prayer with the imam until he concludes the

prayer, it is recorded for him that he prayed the whole night.'…" [Recorded by Ibn Abi Shaybah, Abu Dawud, at-Tirmithi (who authenticated it), an-Nasa'i, Ibn Majah, at-Tahawi (in Sharhu Ma`an il-Athar, Ibn Nasr, al-Faryabi, and al-Bayhaqi. Their isnad is authentic.]
