Using technology for learning in SMEs

How to Scale Informal Learning in SME Networks?

Sharing Turbine

Sharing Turbine - Initial Concept

Linking formal training and informal learning in different contexts

Learning in the Training Centre

White Folder

What is it?What does it do?

Who made it?

Learning at work

Initial Research questions:

What should be the pedagogical approach for developing work-

based mobile learning?

How can we connect to physical artefacts?

How do we integrate digital tools and content with work practices?

Linking different contexts and work and learning domains

authentic work process orientated learning

holistic and integrative working and learning tasks

action-oriented pedagogic approach (Handlungsorientiertes Lernen)

Scaffolding learning

Pedagogic modelsKearney, Schuck, Burden and Aubusson

Design Process includes

Co-Design Workshops

Iterative Design

It didn’t work

The White Folder tasks per se do not easily transfer into a mobile digital format and even if this approach was to be successful it

would be extremely time consuming to digitalise all tasks in their existing form.

So on to Plan B

but first...

How do apprentices use their mobile devices now ?

86,7% use a smartphone (of which 83% are using Android). 19,4% own a tablet

computer, 59,7% a laptop, 54,7% a desktop computer.

1,9% of employers provide access to the internet and only 27% of employers allow the use of

smartphones at the workplace.

58% apprentices use smartphones for work-related calls and 53,2% for information gathering at work. Gathering information needed for work or training is a task that almost 50% do often or

very often

Few use purpose built construction Apps. Information on possibly helpful apps comes from other apprentices (28,1%) or colleagues at work

(17%). 9,5% heard about them from trainers at the workplace or the training centre. 46,8% obtained

information from the internet

WhatsApp is most used for communication. 19,6% of the apprentices

take photos ‘often’ or ‘very often’

about 60 per cent would like more use of mobile devices for learning

Plan B - Learning toolbox, build a range of services based around existing uses of

technology and activities to share ideas, media and data.

and organise multi media training with

Lehrwerkmeisters to iteratively

develop content
