SHORT FUNCTIONAL TEXT

1 RECOUNT TEXTRecount text is a text that telling the reader

about one story, action or activity for information or entertainment

Purpose : to tell the reader about the last event or experience

Generic structure :- Orientation (who, what, where, when)- Sequence of events- Re-orientation

Example :  I was hospitalized for a week because of

malaria last month. At first, I had headache, aching muscles, stomachache, and

weakness. Then, I got fever, chills, loss of appetite and vomiting. I thought that I got

cold, but the doctor said that I had malaria. I was afraid because people suffered from

malaria can develop severe complications and die. The doctor and the nurse tried to

calm me down. They said that malaria could be cured. The doctor then gave me

medicine. After a week in the hospital, the doctor said that I could go home.

2 NARRATIVE TEXTNarrative text is an imaginative story to

entertain people

Purpose : to entertain the readersGeneric structure :- Orientation (what, who, where, when)- Complication (problems)- Resolution (problem solving)- Moral value

Example : The sun shone brightly and the west breeze blew. The kite was flying this way and that way tied to her string.

Suddenly the string snapped. The kite was free. She soared high in the air until she could see far, far away.The kite followed some parrots who took her to see the rainforests. The air was cool and the kite got wet.The kite followed some crocodiles who took her to see the rivers. The air was misty and the kite caught a fish.The kite followed some wallabies who took her to see the deserts. The air was hot and the kite got tired.

So the kite followed the sun who took her back home, right to her string

3 DESCRIPTIVE TEXTDescriptive text is a text which says what a

person or a thing is like.

Purpose : to describe someone/something specifically

Generic structure :- Identification- Description

Example :Yuta is one of the 150 International

students at the ELC of Brigham Young University. He is from Japan. He grew up in

Japan, and he is 19 years old. There are six people in his family, a father, a mother,

three sisters and himself. He is the youngest in his family. He is also the only boy in his family, but now he is in Provo,

Utah, studying English. Yuta likes the United States very much and he thinks

everything is cheap. Yuta thinks his English classes are excellent and the

teachers are professionals. Yuta thinks someone in his class is noisy so he doesn't

like that. In his free time he spends too much time sleeping, so it seems that he

has a sleeping sickness

4 PROCEDURAL TEXT Procedure text is a text to describe how to

make or doing something.

Purpose : to tell the reader how to do something in order.

Generic structure :- Goal- Materials- Steps

Example :

How to cook Instant Noodle

Materials :Instant noodle

WaterA bowl

Firstly, heat the water of 400 cc until boiled and add the noodle after that. Meanwhile the noodle is cooked, mixed the chili powder, the oil and the seasoning into a bowl. Pour the cooked noodle into the bowl. Delicious noodle is ready to eat.

5 REPORT TEXTReport is a text which present information

about something, as it is a result of systematic observation and analyses.

Purpose : to tell/describe something in general

Generic structure :- General identification/classification- Description

Example :

PLATYPUSMany people call platypus duckbill because this animal has a bill like duckbill. Platypus is a native Tasmania and southern and eastern Australia.Platypus has a flat tail and webbed feet. Its body length is 30 to 45 cm and covered with a thick, and woolly layer of fur. Its bill is detecting prey and stirring up mud. Platypus' eyes and head are small. It has no ears but has ability to sense sound and light.Platypus lives in streams, rivers, and lakes. Female platypus usually dig burrows in the streams or river banks. The burrows are blocked with soil to protect it from intruders and flooding. In the other hand, male platypus does not need any burrow to stay.
