Sentence-A set of words that is complete in itself, typically containing a subject and predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation or a command.

-A sentence may consist of one clause (independent clause) or more clauses (independent and dependent clauses).

- An independent clause is also called main clause. A dependent clause is also called subordinate clause.

1. Simple Sentence- conveys one complete idea or thought.

- an independent clause, contains a subject and a verb.

Examples

A.Some students like to study in the mornings.

B. Juan and Arturo play football every afternoon.

C.  Alicia goes to the library and studies every day.

2. Compound Sentence- more than one thought, consisting of independent clauses, either of which could stand alone as a sentence, joined by a conjunction.

- the coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (FANBOYS)

Examples

A.  I tried to speak Spanish, and my friend tried to speak English. 

 B.  Alejandro played football, so Maria went shopping.  

C.  Daniel is not a good dancer, but he can play a guitar well.

3.Complex Sentence-has a thought expressed as one independent, with one or more dependent clauses. 

- A complex sentence always has a subordinator such as because, since, after, although, or when or a relative pronoun such as that, who, or which.

Example:

1.I met the boy who had helped me.

2.She is wearing a shirt which looks nice.

3.You can’t pass the test unless you study for it.

4. Compound-complex - a complex sentence that also has a second independent clause.

- containing adjective clauses (or dependent clauses) are also complex because they contain an independent clause and a dependent clause.

- at least two independents and one or more dependent clauses. Sometimes, it’s called complex-compound.

Examples1. He went to the school and I went to a market where I bought a book.

2. I like Mathematics but my brother likes Biology because he wants to be a doctor.

I. Exercise: Write S for simple, Cd for compound, Cx for complex and CC for compound-complex.

1. When she was 19 months old, Helen Adams Keller suffered as attack of scarlet fever, and she was subsequently left deaf and blind.

2. Blind and deaf Keller was placed under the care of Anne Sullivan.

3. Despite Helen Keller's handicap, she stood high as a legend and a symbol.

4. With her disabilities, she was able to prove to us all that physical disabilities are not deterrents to success, they are stimulants.

5. Helen studied speech under Sarah Fuller and she graduated with honor from Radcliffe College.

6. Since she performed successfully in school, she was awarded a medal of excellence.

7. She served on the staff of the American Foundation for the Blind.

8. She did have a significant encounter with the Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore.

10. That those deprived of sight and hearing can participate in an active intellectual life is her legacy.
