A Reminder Of Who Am I & Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me?

Who Am I….I am a hardworking guy who, like many others, found himself out of work during the economic downturn in 2010. After a long battle of wrong turns, job search strategies that led to no where, and dead end leads, I decided to take a more strategic approach to my job search. Like anything else in life, I needed to treat my search like a full-time job and create a plan that would allow me to stand out above the competition.

Why Am I Sharing What Helped Me…because I quickly realized that to handle an event like that is to focus on what you can control and share the experience to help others. I believe that an experience not shared is a lost opportunity in life, and that smart people learn from their mistakes and smarter people learn from other people’s experiences.

10 Job Search Tips For Success

#10. Network with people in your field that are working.

No form of networking is bad believe me but when you network with people that are working in your field, your mind will stay sharpe and your thoughts will be more clear.

#9. Get certified in your field or get some new form of education to add to your arsenal.

Hiring managers will notice that instead of sitting back and waiting for a job to come to you, you went out and did something for yourself. That said, research which certification is best for you and go get it. Talk to your unemployment office, they may pay for it if you qualify.

#8. Pay forward and help as many people as you can who are unemployed.

Helping other people really builds confidence and gains you a contact that you know will pick up the phone when you call to ask for them to put a good word in for you when you apply at their company. Karma is a real force. Help others and good things will happen to you.

#7. Recommend people you respect or enjoyed working with proactively on LinkedIn.

LinkedIn will ask the person that you recommended, if they would like to recommend you and I have to believe more often then not, people will reciprocate. Recommendations help your profile to get noticed and more visible on LinkedIn. No lose right?

#6. Stop beating yourself up and try not to take things overly personal.

You didn’t ask for this and you tried your hardest every day. There probably was nothing more you could have done. You were great at what you did before and you will be great again. Just believe in yourself and provide yourself balanced feedback. Know your strengths and your weaknesses.

#5. If you received transitional services, take those services when you are ready to learn and able to get the most out of it.

Talk to the transitional services company and work with them on a start date. Make that date work for you and when you do enter that program, it is up to you to drive it. Don’t wait for something to magically happen. This program has limited time. Maximize what you get out of it. Take classes multiple times as they may be taught by multiple people and you will meet more people each time.

#4. Attend Business publication events from your city’s business journal newpaper.

These will be paid events and they may be expensive but you will be face to face with decision makers. You better be on your game when you go to these events as they are networking at a very high level. That said, there will be few unemployed people at these events as people just don’t understand the value in these things. They are 100% wrong. Attending these events will get you in front of many people. There is nothing wrong with that.

#3. Get your resume and LinkedIn profile professionally done.

Let the pros present you in the best possible way via your resume and your LinkedIn profile. Work closely with whoever you use so that you are happy with the outcome but use the pros. To do it yourself, produces something that looks like you did it yourself.

#2. Pay attention to your mood and follow how you feel.

Don’t fight the feeling. Some days you are going to have bad days. Go with it as anything you produce on those bad days will be of low quality. Need to feel better? Go to a spa and indulge or volunteer to help a charity or a cause or something that matters to you. That will help your spirits.

#1. Focus on what you can control.

Meet with as many people for coffee as you can. Remain organized in case a hiring manager calls you out of the blue and wants to talk. Have your business cards with you at all times and be generous with them. You never know who knows who. You cannot always control when someone calls you but you can control how confident you are about your skills and how ready you are to take that call. Remember, you are only looking for one job and who says that this new job won’t be better than the job you just left right?

Thoughts For You To Ponder

I want to reiterate that I am not a professional and only providing you with things I did that helped me out during my own job search.

I do these presentations because the job search process has a lot to do with attitude and outlook. That’s on you. Excuses are for losers. Be a winner and take charge. You can do it because you have done it before I bet.

Make sure you individualize any all of the information provided on this or any of my presentations. My ideas are to guide you and help you to understand concepts.
