Learning about the World of Training
By Vanessa Aller
What does an ID do?What is the hierarchy of the world of training in the US.
Instructional Design
Training PracticesIn this e-learning, you will learn:
We will discuss how distribution of content doesn’t mean “training”.
Talking is not teaching
This is the base from which other training models come from.

Instructional Design
The Design of Instruction
ID (Instructional Design)is the practice of maximizing the effectiveness, efficiency and appeal of instruction and other learning experiences.
The process consists broadly of determining the current state and needs of the learner, defining the end goal of instruction, and creating some "intervention" to assist in the transition.

We’re not talking about this kind of ID. We are talking about this:
Definition by Wikipedia
The higher you go in the pyramid, the more specialized skills you need:
Training Administrative Support: schedule sessions, books rooms and gets materials and equipment ready for training
Learning Management System Support: manages the training materials and training certification are in the LMS
Trainer: facilitates classroom or virtual classroom sessions.
Instructional Designer: is proficient in adult learning principles, needs assessment, course design, development and delivery/implementation.
E-Learning Developer: uses authoring tools to develop e-Learning courses.
Curriculum Designer: uses the adult learning principles to structure content and activities, develop/select training materials for training.
Talking Teaching
Just because you present information something it doesn’t mean learning took place.
Only if the session means the attendee need to perform an action as a result of attending the session, then the “session” can be considered a training. Otherwise is just a presentation.
Uh huhBlah blah blah
If the learner can perform these actions, they learned!
Blooms Taxonomy is the tool used by Instructional Designer to write objectives. Only if you can measure the objective, you can include it in the training.
“A” is for Analysis. What is the “D” in
ADDIE for?
The ADDIE model represent a dynamic, flexible guideline for building effective training and performance support tools.
It is an ongoing cycle because training doesn’t end with “Evaluation”, instead that phase is used to improve the training to revise and improve the training to adapt to the evolving learners needs.
Take one ADDIE to keep
the bad training away. Why is ADDIE a good tool to use?
Because it helps you do the following:
1. Assess the training needs.2. Define content, select/create the right mediums
and educational materials.3. Prevent training problems.4. Create a useful learning experience for the
participant.5. Assess the effectiveness of the training and make
improvements.
To summarize....
Instructional design is the science or interior decoration... What! Just making sure you are paying attention.
• Instructional design is the practice that helps make education efficient and there are different people who perform different roles within the process.
• If you can evaluate the learner mastered the content, then it’s training; otherwise it is ...you got it: a presentation.
• The ADDIE model is the tool of choice used by instructional designers to make the training process a good one for all parties involved.
