Basic Wh- Questions

Information questionsare also called Wh- questions

It is ask forinformation. They aredifferent from Yes/No questions.

Basic Wh- QuestionsWho - refers to people.Whose - asks about possession.Whom - direct or indirect object of a verb or preposition What - refers to things , actions , activities , qualities.When - used to ask about time.Where - used to ask about place.Why - used to ask about reason.Which - used instead of What when choosing from a groupHow - asks about quantity (How many) , amount (How much), size (How 'adjective') , method (How) , frequency (How often).

STRUCTURE In simple present : Use V.do or V.be

Wh-Question Word + Did + Subject + Base Form Of Verb + Complement + ?

USAGE :Sometimes there is no difference.Use which when there is a limited choice.Use what when there is (almost) limited choice.

Ask about the present condition of something.

This condition can change!Example : 1.hows work these days? -its better than last year. 2.how was the traffic this morning? - it was worse than usual.

Relative clausesIdentify which people or thing we are talking aboutMake it possible to give more information about the person or thing.

Defining Relative clauses

Example : 1.Hes the man (who/that) I met on the plane. 2. The woman (who) you saw yesterday has just been promoted. (different subject)

When who/that is the object of a relative clause, it can be left out.

You can omit the relative pronoun when the verbs in the main clause and in the relative clause have a different subject.The subject of met is I, (not he) so its not necessary to put who. (=two different subjects)

When who/that is the subject of a relative clause, it must be included.

The information inside commas can be removed without the sentence losing its meaning. (the sentence makes sense without it)
