Advancements in technology and social media over the last decade demand new ways of integrating current and future technological innovations into public education. We live in an age of personalization that includes often communicating through social media. Yet when many of our students reach our classrooms and it's like the social media doesnt exist. WHY in the classroom? #NAFNext2014 9. Social Media certainly provides a platform for information to be exchanged; it just depends on how we use it. With its simplicity and widespread use, Social Networking surely has the potential to revolutionize education. Teach students about digital citizenship and appropriate use of social media and help them learn and model good behavior by integrating it into the curriculum where appropriate. WHY in the classroom? #NAFNext2014 10. Social Media is Internet based applications that depend on creation & exchange of user-generated data. This is project based learning! Yes, many schools block social media sites which does make it more difficult to use as a learning tool but NOT impossible. Many kids have smart phones, they can usually get around wifi restrictions to access the sites independently or it could be used as an outside of the classroom resource. Begin by teaching Digital Footprint & Ethics 2. Have each student sign a Social Media Ethics Contract 3. Some of you might be asking yourself why should you or your students create these guidelines that might handcuff your ability to add social media effectively in your classroom? Ask each student to evaluate and clean up all of their existing accounts (if necessary) and post the contract to each site informing their followers of their own personal social media policy Limit and establish only 1 -3 social media formats for the classroom to share content, media, research & discussions TIPS #NAFNext2014 26. Have the students update the pages and police the content Create a Social Media Management Team in each of your classes The Social Media Management Team will be responsible for over seeing content & creating new content for each lesson or unit in the NAF curriculum Create a Photography Team (historian) in each of your classes TIPS #NAFNext2014 27. Create a Social Media Ethics Team (or identify a group of students) to help you verify ethical policies are being followed by their themselves and fellow students TIPS #NAFNext2014 28. As a teacher you must use these platforms to make at least once daily to make announcements about upcoming projects, deadlines and activities Utilize Social Media to contact and engage the parents of your students Point students toward additional resources available for them to explore the lessons and topics in more detail TIPS #NAFNext2014 29.
