Information Abundance…

…can become information overload

“It’s not information overload, it’s filter failure.” - Clay Shirky, 2008

FINE THEN.

Traditional Media Literacy Filters = Judgment, Analysis, Critical Thinking

But those are no longer sufficient.

Not all media & information is coming from institutions

- or via broadcast - any longer.

We need to be able to filter AND contribute within the constant,

intermeshed streams of thefire hydrant,

without drowning.

Networks = a Reputational Economy

Digitally Networked Media: 4 qualities

•  Persistent •  Searchable •  Replicable •  Scalable

Identities = the Structure of Networks

Networked Identities = Multiple, Public, Participatory

Many to Many Literacies

Remix & Citation Literacies

New media literacies are more participatory, collaborative, and distributed…less published,

individuated, and author-centric(adapted from Knobel & Lankshear, A New Literacies Sampler, 2007)

Always Connected

Always Hybrid

Now I’m TOTALLY Overwhelmed.

The journey of 1,000 connectionsbegins with a single signal.

Networks are connections, identity to identity

To build connections in a network:

But what does this have to do with education?

Let Go of the Need to Know Everything

What do students need to know?

How do I know?

h:p://www.flickr.com/photos/marcobellucci/3534516458/

I don’t know.

Teaching/learning in networks = 1.  Preparing for uncertainty 2.  Letting go of THE answer 3.  Offering possibilities and experiences 4.  Dealing with complexity 5.  Being responsible to your own learning 6.  Drawing your own map & making it visible

Not just for teachers but for students

A networked education…

l  Connects

l  Cultivates

l  Curates

…but cannot control or count value

in the same ways asinstitutional models of education

Where will you begin?J
