I have a hearing loss

and I want to

communicate

with YOU.

You might notice that I stare

at your lips.

Why?

Am I thinking about

???

Definitely NOT!

I need to see your

because I lipread.

I don’t care

if your lips look like

I stare because

I HEAR with my EYES.

I stare to “see” sounds like:

DON’T expect me to lipread:

the back of

your head,

in the dark,

Shouting(it distorts your lips),

or through

your Hands.

I need to see your lips.

Don’t whisper in my ear.

Just show me your lips!

It’s difficult

to lipread

a profile.

I need you to face me.

If I can’t see your lips, you may as well

do THIS:

You may feel uncomfortable

because I’m staring at you, but

If I look away, I won’t understand

what you’re saying.

Make sure I’m looking at you before

you speak to me.

If the source of light is behind you like

this:

we need to switch places.

Please keep your head still when you

speak

Bobble head

because it’s impossible

to lipread a moving target.

Please repeat when necessary

and if I still don’t understand

use different words:

“We went to the grocery store.”

“John and I bought food at the food store.”

“The two of us went to the supermarket.”

I may or may not have the ability to hear some sounds,

so speak at a normal volume, or possibly a little louder than

usual.

Background noise

competes with your voice.

We need to talk

in a fairly quiet place.

I’m not trying to be the center of

attention when I position myself to

see your lips.

I just want to understand what

you’re saying.

Every person with hearing loss is

different.

Some use sign language and don’t

lipread at all.

But I do.

Just remember,

I need to see YOUR LIPS!
