Getting the right Enclosure

• You can get good mouse enclosures on these websites:• http://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/mouse-cage

• Your mouse tank should be secure and have appropriate space for the amount of mice

Getting the wheel, bowls, E.T.C

• A perfect toy for mice can be a toilet roll without any paper as they can play with it and tear it up to make a bed.

• You should have a food and water bowl or a water bottle.• A wheel is also ideal as this provides a good source of exercise.•

Making it mouse safe

• If you get a second hand tank and it has cracks then cover these with a sticky film like wallpaper from your local home design shop.

• Make sure that the tank is secure and the lid can not be popped off. Our tank was second hand so we put a board over the lid to prevent escape.

Getting the mice

• There are many colours to choose from and many different personalities.• When the person from the shop puts their hand in you can immediately tell

what the mouse`s personality is if you pay attention and watch closely.• Some mice will sneak around and have their eyes half shut. These are the

more nervous mice that are less easy to tame and handle. These mice are still alright to buy though as I have one but they just need more handling to get them used to being held.

• Some mice will look comfortable with the hand being there and act normally with their eyes fully open. These are the ones that are already tame and very dosile.

Introducing the mice

• If you already own mice and are introducing the new residents to the already resident mice then put the mice that are already living in the enclosure in a bath in your house. Then open the lid of the new box and let them run around with each other in the bath. Leave them to come out at their own pace as if they are forced out this may worry them and make them nervous. Close supervision is needed as they may not like each other and may attack. This is always a risk to be aware of.

• If these are your first mice then just open the box lid and leave them to come out at their own pace as if they are forced out this may worry them and make the nervous.

Mouse Behaviour in a new enclosure

• The mice will first explore the tank and smell their new surroundings before settling in.

• Always give mice some ripped up tissue as the more expensive pre-made bedding is no better than normal tissue paper. They will soon make a bed in a chosen spot and occasionally move the bed around the tank until they find their preferred location.

• They may also make a sort of chirping noise. This is them calling for other mice.
