DESCRIPTION

If literacy is just ‘reading and writing’ then why has so much ink been spilled over such a simple concept? Is there just one ‘literacy’ to rule them all? Or are there multiple literacies? Is what we do online a ‘literacy’? I believe there to be 8 essential elements to digital literacies and that definitions of digital literacies should be co-created to have power. In this presentation I point to useful resources (from JISC and elsewhere), ask some questions as conversation starters and provide some practical examples of how you can develop digital literacy skills in yourself and others. Since this presentation, I've written an e-book entitled 'The Essential Elements of Digital Literacies' that you may want to check out: https://gum.co/digilit

CoCommunicative

“Digital literacy must therefore involve a systematic awareness of how digital media are constructed and of the unique 'rhetorics' of interactive communication.”

Buckingham (2007)

THE 8 ELEMENTS

“Modern society is increasingly looking to [people] who can confidently solve problems and manage their own learning throughout their lives, the very qualities which ICT supremely is able to promote.”

THE 8 ELEMENTS

“The creative adoption of new technology requires teachers who are willing to take risks... a prescriptive curriculum, routine practices... and a tight target-setting regime, is unlikely to be helpful.”

“Once we see that online texts are not exactly written or spoken, we begin to understand that cyberliteracy requires a special form of critical thinking. Communication in the online world is not quite like anything else.”
