On One Hand . . .

• Still a landscape of ~5 LMS solutions

• LMS Core Functions: Rosters, Grades, Assignments, Submissions, Class Messages / Discussions

• What’s the big deal?

"There's a tsunami coming. [But] I can't tell you exactly how it's going to break."

John Hennessy, Stanford

"We are at the beginning of a technology-led revolution in pedagogy: Our innovation is not the blackboard, but instead an evolving suite of tools that allows interactive learning online"

Drew Faust, HarvardL. Rafael Reif, MIT

On the Other Hand . . .

• Everything has changed

Page 12: Hill Slides ITC eLearning 2015 Conference: Beyond the Walled Garden

Good Lens

• Everett Rogers wrote the origin of much of technology adoption concepts

• S-curve, categories of adopters

Page 13: Hill Slides ITC eLearning 2015 Conference: Beyond the Walled Garden
Page 14: Hill Slides ITC eLearning 2015 Conference: Beyond the Walled Garden

Two Sides of the Chasm• Innovators & Early Adopters: Willing to take risks, influential

• Early Majority: Much slower adoption, need holistic solutions

• Late Majority: Approach an innovation with a high degree of skepticism and after the majority of society has adopted the innovation

From an organizational change perspective, we are just

starting with online education & application of educational

technology in the mainstream

Counter-example

• Walled gardens will still have a place, but no longer in broad sense (this is what we support for whole school) and instead for specific academic programs

This Won’t Be Easy

Bottom Line

• Apparent dilemma: Frustration, slow change vs. Everything is changing

• Best understood by Straddling the Chasm

• Move away from walled garden is biggest trend to allow service of both sides of Chasm
