energy for your body

• Carbohydrates have a protein sparing role

• Helps with fat metabolism

• Both high and low carbs diets are

instrumental in losing weight, thus leaving

you healthy and fit

How much do we need?

• Human body demands a minimum amount

of carbohydrates to function properly

• Each gram of carbohydrates provides 4

calories

• Our body needs around 35-50% of calories

from carbohydrates

• Anything lower than that is not going to fuel

the body adequately

• Comprised of wholegrains, fruits, vegetables

which provide adequate fibre and water content

• Great provider of vitamins A & C, folate,

carotene, calcium, iron and magnesium

• Helps to achieve a low BMI (Body Mass Index) if

eating the right types

• Fibre is important to keep the gut clean, lower

cholesterol and aid in weight loss

What is a low carb diet?

• Believed to have lesser amount of calories

• Primary reason why they form a part of

numerous weight loss programmes

(example: Atkins Diet and Zone Diet)

• Low carb diets are comprised of meat, fish,

eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds, high-fat dairy,

healthy oils and some tubers

• Helps in retaining body mass and muscle

strength
