Here’s How
Maximize Your Time
Pomodoro Technique Set a timer for 25 minutes. Just work. No texting, no social media, no laundry, no cleaning off your desk to make it a better writing space. Use a regular timer, or try a computer or smart phone app.
More Info
Turn off Distractions Sometimes we need a little help to focus. • Freedom (Mac + Android) • Anti-social (Windows + Mac) • Self Control (Mac)
Writing Tools • 750words.com (Web-based) • Write or Die (Windows + Mac + Linux) • Scrivener (Mac + Windows) • OmmWriter (Mac + Windows + iPad) • Scrivener (Mac + Windows)
Citation Tools AKA: stop writing your citations by hand. You have better things to do with your time. And your brain. We support Zotero, but there are plenty of options like Mendeley, RefWorks/Flow, and EndNote. And more! PS: Winter break would be a great time to get all your citations and PDF files organized More on Zotero
Search Like an Expert
Advanced Keyword Wrangling • Combine words with AND to make sure you get results
with all of those search terms • Combine related words with OR when you would take
any of those words. • Use NOT if there’s an annoying word that you don’t
want to see in your search results • Put words in quotes to get that exact phrase • Use * for words that may have different endings (aka
truncation)
Gender Women Girls Men
Social media Twitter Facebook Instagram
(gender or women or girls) AND (“social media” or Twitter or Facebook or Instagram) NOT bully*
Search in a Database on Your Discipline
• Articles Plus, Google Scholar and JSTOR are all interdisciplinary. Sometimes that’s good, but sometimes you just need research in YOUR discipline
• Most disciplines have a subject-specific database with articles, and sometimes references for books, theses, etc.
• Some databases also offer primary sources • Ask a subject librarian for recommendations.
Find Your Database
Make New Research Come to You • Many databases and lots of journal publishers offer
search alerts or notifications of new table of contents for your most relevant journals.
• How you set this up depends on the discipline and database. Check with your subject librarian.
