Failing Numeric Grades

• % F e.g. 55F enter grade with F

• %S e.g. 55S registration will change F to S if eligible for supp.

Sequence of Supp. Grade Changes

• %P e.g. 60P

• “Highest pass grade that will be assigned to a supplemental exam will be the minimum pass grade for the course.”

OR

• %U e.g. 55U or 59U

• “The mark used will be the higher of the original failing grade or the supplemental examination grade.”

In this example, then

55F – original failing grade

55S – eligible for supplemental privilege

60P – if passed supplemental exam; or

59U – if improved grade but still failed exam

SIAST Alternative Grades• AEG Aegrotat Pass based on exceptional circumstances. • AT Attendance Attendance required for successful completion (no assessment)• AU Audit No active participation or formal assessment • CO Complete Work placement successfully completed • CN Continuing Course continuing to the next term • CR Credit Course requirements met • EX Exemption Exempt from course requirement • F Failure Failed course requirements, no % provided • IN Incomplete Course requirements not complete (grade converts to failure after six

months from the course end date if requirements are not completed• NC Not complete Work placement not successfully completed • NT Not taken Used for Co-operative Education only to indicate the Co- operative

Education component was not taken • P Pass Course requirements successfully completed • TC Transfer credit/ Transfer credit or equivalent credit granted for a course Equivalent credit• W Withdrawal Withdrawal without academic penalty (generally assigned if withdrawal

occurs prior to 75% course completion) • WF Withdrawal failure Withdrawal with academic penalty (0% in cumulative average

calculation) (generally assigned if withdrawal occurs after 75% course completion)

Grade Point Average (GPA)

“A grade point average is a weighted average that expresses the general quality of academic achievement. The GPA calculation is based on the grade received and the credit value associated to the course. GPA is calculated by multiplying the grade in each course by the course credit value to obtain a weighted grade point for each course. The weighted course grade points are added and divided by the total credit value of the courses to determine the GPA. Only grades from credit courses completed at SIAST are used to calculate a GPA.”

Example:• 75% X 3 credits = 225 weighted grade points• 60% X 5 credits = 300

• Total points ÷ total credits = GPA• 525 points ÷ 8 credits = 65.63 GPA (vs. 67.5 avg)

Course Repeats

• Highest grade is included (I) in GPA• Lower grade is excluded (E) in GPA

• Includes/Excludes appear on transcript• Grade summary reports do not use I/E so will

display actual GPA for that term

* Transcript and Grade Summary will not be the same; therefore, use GS for term decisions

Incomplete Grades

“Incomplete grades are applied to enrolled students who do not complete a course by the course end date due to a missed exam or assignment resulting from exceptional circumstances beyond the student’s control. (example: family tragedy or serious illness). The student does not require additional instruction and/or program resources to complete the course(s). If a grade remains incomplete for a period of 6 months from the course end date, the grade is changed to a failure (%F).”

IN(complete) Grades

• housekeeping only – does not mean student has 6 months to complete the missing assignment. 10 days is a good guideline.

Grade Entry

• final grades must be entered within 10 days• mySIAST – mid-term or final grades only• Gradebook – spreadsheet of all components

being graded in the course• grades “roll” to students’ history overnight,

every night• changes can be made same day• later changes must be submitted on form

• Supplemental Exam (A-1.9) applied first; then• use GPA to determine if probationary status• use GPA and failures to determine RTD status
