What is Reading?

Reading is a complex process that involves sensation, perception, comprehension, application and integration.

Reading is the golden key to the world of enlightenment and enjoyment. It is the basic tool for learning in all subject areas.

Reading can be one of a person’s deepest pleasures. It extends his experiences, giving him a glimpse of the world’s excitement, pleasures and wisdom.

Reading enables one to ponder the mysteries of the universe, explore accumulated knowledge, and contemplate the unknown.

Interact with text. Always ready to evaluate, challenge

and criticize what he/she reads. Have goals for reading. Monitor his/her understanding as

he/she reads. Process text during and after

reading.

Two Kinds of Reading

Extensive Reading– reading for pleasure in a wide variety of interesting topics-- The main purpose is to relax and enjoy.

Intensive Reading– reading carefully or in-depth reading --The main purpose is to extract details and specific information on particular topics.

Strategies for Intensive Reading

1. Skimming– a reading technique which aims to get the gist of a text

2. Scanning– a very quick reading technique to get specific details

3. Exploratory Reading– a reading technique used to get a fairly accurate picture of the whole presentation of ideas and to get a more thorough understanding of ideas

Strategies for Intensive Reading

4. Study Reading– a type of reading in which a reader must get a maximum understanding of the main ideas and their relationships.Techniques involved in Study Reading:

Preliminary skimming Thinking and questioning oneself before

reading Concentrating on small units one at a time,

with breaks for thinking and note-taking between units

Reviewing the basic ideas before close reading

5. Critical Reading– is the kind of reading which makes you pause to carefully consider what you have just read.

Critical Reading requires the following techniques:

Go back and carefully consider what you know about the source of the reading material and the possible biases and ulterior motives;

Consider what you know about the author, his background and knowledge of the subject;

Watch out for any inconsistent logic or errors in reasoning;

Beware of emotionally loaded words which appeal to your basic emotions and try to stir up your emotional reaction for or against what is presented.
