MY REVIEW

Adam Grant’s book, Give and Take, is an outstanding addition to the plethora of social science books to enter the scene in the last few years.

Give and Take is on par with Switch to me because it flows so well, is interesting without being skim-worthy, and teaches you how to be a better person while pursuing your own self-interest.

There is such a thing as being a giver with selfish motives. Of being a seller without selling out. By being a high-giver without being a doormat.

Give and Take shows you how giving makes you happier, more productive, and reduces burnout.

GRETCHEN RUBIN | THE HAPPINESS PROJECTPacked with cutting-edge research, concrete examples, and

deep insight, Give and Take offers extraordinarily thought-provoking—and often surprising—conclusions about how our interactions with others drive our success and happiness. This important and compulsively-readable book deserves to be a huge success.

FIND WAYS TO GIVE

Give and Take shows illuminating evidence that shows 100 hours of volunteering accelerates your happiness levels. That’s 2 hours a week! So find one thing you want to make a difference in and do it!

Not only should you make a difference, but you need to define your ultimate goal. Whether that’s building a school system in a poor economy or cleaning roadways, find what matters to you because that will make you happiest. Set goals that are difficult but achievable, because those will inspire you the most—especially when you receive positive feedback and can see the difference you make!

AVOID BURNOUT

Without giving too much of the book away, Give and Take suggests switching topics and finding out how you made a difference. This is more difficult for teachers, but is still possible when you find a way to do something similar for people that allows you to still make a difference while you’re avoiding the burnout from your original work.

If you’re burned out from your animal shelter work, try working with dogs that need house training for two hours a week. Add more volunteer hours, not less, but in a different context than the usual.
