Gerhard

Born in Lagow, Germany on the 30th of October of 1895.

Renown German chemist and pathologist who researched infections of a bacterial origins.

Discovered that the industrial dye prontisil could prove as an effective treatment for staphylococci and haemolytic streptococci .

Life as Gerhard Born Gerhard Johannes Paul Domagk

He became a med student at Kiel until the 1914-1918 war broke out . In 1914 he joined the army but was later wounded and joined the sanitary service instead where his interests in bacterial infections began.

In 1932 he began working for a recently formed research institute founded for pathology and bacteriology.

Won the Nobel peace prize in Medicine or Physiology 1939 but the Nazis forced him to decline the award.

His research following the award pertained to cancer and tuberculosis.

Experiments• The experiments Domagk performed

were primarily on mice and rabbits where he observed that red dye-stuff protected the animals that were exposed to lethal amounts of staphylococci and haemolytic streptococci .

• He even omitted from his research that his own daughter had been affected by a staphylococci infection , wherein he gave her his experimental drug and she recovered.

• In 1935 several other proffessionals begin to experiment with Domagk’s newly developed drugs all of which were successful.

Scientific contribution• At the time Domagk’s work was

revolutionary because the only treatments for bacterial infections were surgery ( which had a substantially high mortality rate) and amputation….
