Getting Started usinge-journals

Geography, Third World,

International Relations

Logging in

All our electronic library resources need to be accessed through the University of Derby Library pages. Login through UDo then go to the Library web page.

This is because we pay for our online resources and you need to show that you are eligible to use them.

Finding a specific journal

• To find a specific electronic journal use the Electronic Journals A-Z.

• Do not use the A-Z to find articles from a range of journals.

• You may also use Library Plus to find a specific journal

To go to the Electronic Journals A-Z click on Finding Subject Information

Then Electronic Journals A-Z.

(For information – the main resources links are also in the Library Subject Guides– select Science then Geography or Third World Development & International Relations) and they are also under Digital Library

The Electronic Journals A-Z is a full list with links to all the Library’s e-journals. Don’t use it as a search for journal articles on a topic

Example of locating a particular e-journal article:Sumner, A (2013) Poverty, politics & aid. Third World Quarterly, 34 (3) 357-377

Type in the journal title or part of the journal title (not the journal article title) i.e. third world quarterly

Then click on the publisher link below the title, in this case either of the Taylor & Francis links.

Note the Business Source Premier link does not include more recent articles.

Please take note of the dates we have available in the A-Z list & note that we will not have access to all years of a journal, especially older years.

Keep on going through the links to get to 2013 vol 34 no.3

You may need a lot of clicks but you get there in the end. The green square indicates full access.Other publishers may use e.g. an unlocked padlock

The whole article is usually viewed by a link such as Read Article, Full Text, PDF.

Note you may also search the journal by author / keyword etc. in the search box at the top

Where to look for electronic journal articles on a topic?

There is no one single correct way of searching for journal articles on a topic, but it is recommended you use Library Plus

Library Plus Includes

•Many of our electronic journals subscriptions

•Many of the library journals databases (including Expanded Academic ASAP, Science Full Text Select, Science Direct)

Library Plus also includes

Lists of journal articles we don’t have immediate access to.

e.g. journals we don’t subscribe to but which are in indexes and database e.g., Web of Science,

There are various ways of searching Library Plus. You can search Library Plus directly from the Library page. This is a basic search, but you are then able to refine your search.e.g. type jordan israel water conflict into the Library Plus search box to do a basic search on the Jordanian – Israeli water conflict.

You can refine your search by adding more keywords or by doing an Advanced Search. To see journal articles we have full access to tick in the box Limit to Full Text

A Full Text link will give you the complete journal article

The “Check our ejournals A-Z” is not as direct but should also give access to the full-text of the article. It may require several clicks & links to reach the article

Now click on a full text link

And again

And the journal article is displayed

You can also go to the Library Plus search page by selecting Finding Subject Information

Library Plus link under Quick Links. Also in the Library Subject guides under Science & in Digital Library

If you use Basic Search you can click on Search Options

Full Text: limits search to e-journal articles we have access to. For a journals search, this is the best option at this stage to avoid finding publications we don’t have access to.

“Available in Library Collection”limits the search to the Library catalogue & Full Text e-journals.

Advanced Search can give more flexibility & allows you to do a more sophisticated search

You can combine search terms by using the different search boxes.

AND combines the search terms & narrows the search.

Think of keywords and be prepared to change them and use alternatives. Do not put in long phrases or essay titles

Tick this box & you will only see articles we have full access to. If you leave it unticked you will also see journal articles we do not have full access to

You can narrow the search further by using more keywords, by date, limiting to academic journals or e.g. by changing the field to title (so a word has to be in the article title)

The full text box has already been selected so you should be able to see the all of these articles.

Saving references in Library Plus

You can save results into a folder in Library Plus.

If you want to save references for future use you can create your own personal account and then Sign In to your personal account.

You can give folders names.

You still need to login through the Library page to start with.

You can save results into a folder. Click on the “+” icon which changes to an envelope. You can create your own personal account by Signing in with a personal username & password & this will save any folders for future use. You can give folders names.

You can the give the folder a name and go back to it another time & add to it.

Using Library Plus to look for a specific journal article

You can look for a specific journal article when you know the details either using:

•Electronic Journals A-Z (as earlier example)

•Library Plus (but doesn’t include absolutely every journal which is in our A-Z list)

Using Library Plus to find the journal article

Nelson, F (2012) Blessing or curse? The political economy of tourism development in Tanzania. Journal of Sustainable Tourism, 20 (3), 359-375.

No one correct way but use Advanced Search & then:e.g. change the fields to author or title or source and type in the author’s name, and/or a word or two from the article title or a word or two from the journal

Then click on the Full Text link to display the whole article

To go to the Library Subject guides select Finding Subject Information. These give more information on journals and different databases

Then Science

Then either Geography or Third World Development & International Relations

Front page of Geography library guide

One of the help pages in the library guide with links & information on other databases & resources

For more detailed information about Library Plus select Digital Library

Then Library Plus Search Tips
