COMBINING THE FOUR LEVELS
COMBINING THE FOUR LEVELS
The first and last level is the text then bearing in mind the level of
reality.
On the level of naturalness, you translate informative and vocative text
irrespective of the naturalness of the original
For expressive and authoritative text, you keep to a natural level only if
the original is written in ordinary language.
It is at the “naturalness” rather than the reality stage of translating that
accuracy becomes most important.
Accuracy in translation lies normally within certain narrow ranges of
words and structures, certain linguistic limits.
THE UNIT TRANSLATING
THE RANGE AND SCOPE OF THE UT
Catford, following Halliday, proposes a systemic hierarchy of five units for consideration in translating. They are, in descending order:
1. the sentence,2. clause,3. group,4. word and5. morpheme (Catford 1965: 8).
TRANSLATION UNIT
A translation unit is a segment of a text that the translator treats as a single cognitive unit for the purposes of establishing an equivalence. The translation unit may be a single word, a phrase, one or more sentences, or even a larger unit.
When a translator segments a text into translation units, the larger these units are, the better chance there is of obtaining an idiomatic translation.
The first sign of translation problem is where these automatic procedures from language to language
Literal translation works best in written, prosy, semi-formal, non-literary language, & also with innovative language.
After the sentence , you go to clauses within the clause, the two cohesive types of collocations, adjective-plus-noun or verb-plus-object, or the various groups that are less context bound.
Other difficulties with grammar are usually due to use of archaic, little used, ambiguously placed or faulty structures
Remember that if long sentences & complicated structures are an essential part of the text, & characteristic of the author rather than of the norms of the source language, you should reproduce a corresponding deviation from the target language norms in your own version.
