Before Reading!

KWL chart…Before reading we will make a KWL chart

This is what we know about the book, what we want to know

about the book, and when were done reading we will fill out the L

which is what we learned.

We predict what the passage might be about!

In other words, we make guesses about what might happen in the

story!

We choose important vocabulary words to focus on

We learn the definitions of those words

This will help us gain understanding of the text we

read!

We will read the titles and headings

This will give us an idea of what the book is about

Sometimes the titles and captions help us understand the main idea!

We STOP sometimes during reading and summarize what we have already read!

This helps us REMEMBER and COMPREHEND what we read.

This way we actually LEARN it instead of MEMORIZING it.

We practice VISUALIZING what we are reading!

We can look up pictures or videos to help us understand too!

If we read about tigers we VISUALIZE tigers!

We can stop to ask questions when we don’t understand

something!We can also decide whether something makes sense or not

from what we've read.

We can predict what will happen next in the text based on what we read!

This makes us THINK about what might happen, or what we might learn about!

It also keeps us focused so we can make EDUCATED guesses!

When we stop to ask questions we can also talk about words we didn’t know.

How did you figure out what they mean? Did you use context clues? Did you just skip the word?

We will finish filling out our KWL chart with what we learned from reading our

book. We will also talk about what we learned

What we found interesting And what our favorite part of the book.

We will summarize what the book was about…

This will include asking questions for understanding..

Explaining what the book was about to show comprehension.

We can talk about what was confusing and what we didn’t understand.

We can also talk about what we could do next time to better prepare for

reading the text.

This is to make sure that the information we learned stays in

our LONGTERM memory!

We will talk about which of our predictions were right, and which we

got wrong. We will talk about why we thought

those things would happen in the book and where our prior knowledge

came from.
