Flip ChartCRITICAL ASSIGNMENT 1
Before Reading!
KWL chart…Before reading we will make a KWL chart
This is what we know about the book, what we want to know
about the book, and when were done reading we will fill out the L
which is what we learned.
Before Reading!
We predict what the passage might be about!
In other words, we make guesses about what might happen in the
story!
Before Reading!
We choose important vocabulary words to focus on
We learn the definitions of those words
This will help us gain understanding of the text we
read!
Before Reading!
We will read the titles and headings
This will give us an idea of what the book is about
Sometimes the titles and captions help us understand the main idea!
Before Reading!
We can make a graphic organizerThis will help us
organize informationAnd get ready to
read!
During Reading!
We STOP sometimes during reading and summarize what we have already read!
This helps us REMEMBER and COMPREHEND what we read.
This way we actually LEARN it instead of MEMORIZING it.
During Reading
We practice VISUALIZING what we are reading!
We can look up pictures or videos to help us understand too!
If we read about tigers we VISUALIZE tigers!
During Reading!
We can stop to ask questions when we don’t understand
something! We can also decide whether something makes sense or not
from what we've read.
During Reading!
We can predict what will happen next in the text based on what we read!
This makes us THINK about what might happen, or what we might learn about!
It also keeps us focused so we can make EDUCATED guesses!
During Reading!
When we stop to ask questions we can also talk about words we didn’t know.
How did you figure out what they mean? Did you use context clues? Did you just skip the word?
Tell me what you did.
After Reading!
We will finish filling out our KWL chart with what we learned from reading our
book. We will also talk about what we learned
What we found interesting And what our favorite part of the book.
After Reading!
We will summarize what the book was about…
This will include asking questions for understanding..
Explaining what the book was about to show comprehension.
After Reading!
We can talk about what was confusing and what we didn’t understand.
We can also talk about what we could do next time to better prepare for
reading the text.
After Reading!
We will have a comprehension worksheet
This is to make sure that the information we learned stays in
our LONGTERM memory!
After Reading!
We will talk about which of our predictions were right, and which we
got wrong. We will talk about why we thought
those things would happen in the book and where our prior knowledge
came from.
