Executive Summary

Introduction:

Employee satisfaction is the terminology used to describe whether employees are happy and

contented and fulfilling their desires and needs at work. (Heathfield, 2015) It is the part of

the work attitude which results in job involvement and commitment to organization. The

employee satisfaction survey was conducted during the month of May 2015 for the following

employees:

Job Band 12-14 – Supervisory Cadre

Permanent Workmen

Contract Labour Workmen

The survey was conducted keeping in mind the recent issues at Muri Works and the

questionnaire was prepared under the guidance of the HR department. The responses were

taken using the 5 point Likert scale.

About Muri Works:

With an eye to build size and scale, Hindalco acquired in FY 2000 a majority stake in Indian

Aluminium Company Limited (Indal) - having a major presence in downstream aluminum

products and a leader in special alumina from Alcan of Canada.

In August 2004, the boards of Hindalco and Indal approved a Scheme of Arrangement

wherein all the assets of Indal other than the foil unit at Kollur in Andhra Pradesh were to be

demerged into Hindalco. This has come into effect retrospectively from 1 April 2004.

Hindalco’s presence in Jharkhand (through erstwhile Indal) dates back to 1943 when mining

commenced at Bagru in the Lohardga district. Commissioned in 1948, the Muri alumina plant

was India’s first alumina refinery. The recently expanded alumina refinery operates at

450,000 t.p.a capacity with a management team of 67 people. (Aditya Birla Management

Corporation Pvt. Ltd, 2015) The Muri plant has 130 supervisory staff (Job Band 12-14), 604

Permanent Employees and an average intake of 1200 contract workmen from about 48

contractors.

Objective of survey:

The objective of this survey is to find out the satisfaction index for the employees and

contract workmen working in the organization and give suggestions for improving employee

satisfaction. A target coverage of maximum employees possible has been set.

Limitations if any:

There are a few limitations to a study like this like, time constraints, insufficient data, lack of

employee interest to talk to the researcher, uncertainty of the sample matching with the entire

population, proper analysis of data. These limitations are present and hence research is never

considered error free.

Research Methodology:

Research will be done to find out the satisfaction levels amongst the employees of Hindalco,

Muri and suggest ways how to improve their satisfaction. This is primarily a qualitative and

quantitative study. This includes the following:

Survey Questionnaire

Personal interviews

Analysis of Data

Direct Observation

Survey tools:

A well-structured questionnaire will be used. Weighted scores will be assigned to each

question The Likert scale will be used in this regard to measure the responses of the

respondents. Comparative analysis will be done if required along with the use of percentages,

bar graphs etc. Interviews and direct observation will also be used. The questionnaire have

been made differently for the different job bands.

Questionnaire for JB 12-14 consists of 31 questions.

Questionnaire for permanent workmen consists of 30 questions.

Questionnaire for contract workmen comprises of 18 questions.

Universe:

This will consist of the entire workforce at Hindalco Industries Ltd., Muri.

Sample size:

119 employees in the Job Band 12-14 supervisory category.

370 employees in the Permanent Workmen category.

704 contract workmen among the contract laborers.

Data Analysis and Interpretation

The above table shows the response of employees regarding the first question and among 119

people 68 people strongly agreed and 39 somewhat agreed with the question (i.e.) 107

employees (89.92%) agreed that they are given chance to do their job in alternative ways that

make them comfortable in performing the job. This indicates good work atmosphere in the

organization and favorable to the employees. The below diagram shows the pictorial

representation of data.

In the above table 59 people strongly agreed and 42 somewhat agreed (i.e.) 101 employees

agreed (84.87%), that the infrastructure provided by the company enables them in performing

better proving that the plant has good infrastructure that favors the employees.

The above table indicates that 87 employees (42 strongly agree, 45 somewhat agree) i.e.

73.11% agreed and (23 somewhat disagreed, 6 strongly disagreed) i.e.24.37 % disagreed.

This indicates that some employees are facing the problem of shortage of materials and

equipment. Hence the company needs to make sure that supplies are provided sufficiently so

as to have better working.

The analysis indicates that 113 employees among 119 employees agreed that the safety

measures in the organization are good. This indicates that safety policies in the organization

are good and the employees feel secured working at plant.

The above table depicts 106 employees of 119 employees i.e. 89.08% are agreeing that they

are getting the opportunity to do what they are good at. This indicates that organization

prefers work perfection because it gives the employee a chance to do what they are good at

making the tasks to be performed more professionally and perfectly.

The 93 employees of 119 employees i.e. 78.15% agree that their complaints and grievances

are being handled by the organization, But 22 employees i.e. 18.48% disagree with this

factor. This indicates that the organization pays attention on employee problems and in

solving them and needs to be more precise in executing them more timely.

The analysis indicates that 83 employees of 119 employees i.e. 91.60% agree that they have

opportunity to learn and grow at work place. This indicates that organization has good growth

opportunities for employees and helps in improving their knowledge every day at work.

The analysis shows that 77 employees of 119 employees i.e. 64.71% are satisfied with the

recreational facilities provided by the organization, indicating that the organization pays

attention in providing the comforts regarding employee’s personal life.

The above analysis indicates that 84 employees of 119 employees i.e. 70.59% are agreeing

that the cultural activities held in the organization are good. This indicates that the

organization pays attention in improving the healthy relationships among employees and

provides them entertainment to relieve their work stress.

The above analysis indicates that 113 employees of 119 employees i.e. 94.96% agree that the

communication meeting in the canteens is useful. This indicates that there are good meetings

in the organization that help in flow of information among employees and to express their

problems that help the organization in solving them immediately.

In the above analysis 94 employees of 119 employees i.e. 78.99% are agreeing that the

appraisal process in the unit is fair. This indicates that the organization follows a fair

appraisal process for employees without any barriers.

The analysis indicate that 82 employees of 119 employees i.e. 68.91% are agreeing that the

welfare facilities were adequate and well maintained, but 36 employees disagree with this

factor. This indicates that the welfare facilities have to be improvised in the necessary areas

so that employees have better facilities.

transport bills are being held good at organization.

medical facilities provided are good, but 93 employees disagree with this factor. This depicts

that the medical facilities provided by organization should be improved so that the employees

The above analysis shows that 38 employees of 119 employees’ i.e. 31.93% agree that the

canteen facilities are good, but 78 employees i.e. 65.55% disagreed with this fact. This

indicates that the organization has to pay attention in improving the canteen facilities like

improving the quality and quantity of food and hygiene of the canteen.

Muri as a work place. This indicates that the organization has provided good work

atmosphere for employees at Muri that shows that the organization high retention rate.

In this analysis, 102 employees of 119 employees 85.71% i.e. Agreed that they are well

informed about what is going on in the department. This indicates that the organization has

good information flow from higher authorities to next levels and depicts that the organization

has good organization structure.

spends adequate time on their development. This indicates the organization pays attention to

the individual development in the organization that integrates the overall growth of the

organization.

This analysis shows that around 86.55% of employees i.e. 103 employees of 119 employees

agree that their talent is encouraged. This shows that work culture in the organization is

healthy and every individual is encouraged in displaying their skills.

The above analysis 91.60% i.e. 109 employees agreed that there are provided with the

information to perform their work. This shows that the organization provides employees the

requirements sufficiently to carry out their duties depicting good work culture.

This analysis shows that 84 employees agreed that there are given timely training. This

indicates that organization takes timely measure in updating the skills of employees as per

requirement which ultimately helps in updating the skills of the organization.

In this analysis 92.44% i.e. 110 employees agreed that training increases their knowledge and

skills. This depicts that the training skills imparted in the organization are useful and

improves the knowledge of the employees.

full cooperation from other departments. This indicates that the organization has good inter

department relationships that work collectively for the growth of the organization.

Facilities should be provided for visiting other Hindalco units for training and

experience, to learn about successful implementation in other Hindalco units and

implement them in Muri. Training according to personal preferences/qualification is

not available. Additional training with respect to requirements are not available. No

schedule for supervisor training, HR policy should be explained in training.

Canteen should provide better quality food because food quality in canteen is very

low.

Control room, station should have notice boards which should be updated. Older

supervisors prefer noticeboard as they do not check email that often. The internet

connection is slow too.

Medical facility should be improved. Medical claim facility is not good, claim is only

possible when admitted for more than three days. Doctors are not available always in

OHC, There are no specialists at OHC. It function only as a first aid center not as a

Permanent Workmen

Suggestions / Feedback:

Pay should increase according to present scenario. Promotion policy should be made

more employee friendly. Payment must be work based. Overtime must be given to

motivate the employees.

Training is not according to the workmen's choice. More training is required for

young workmen as they are new to an industrial work environment. Talent should be

promoted in the work place. Training provided should be better and more job related.

Each and every employee should be involved in training. Practical and process job

related training should be given to the well qualified employees.

There is no meaning of cycle allowance as most of the employees have motorcycles.

Transport facility is only available during emergency. Transport allowance should be

Contract Workmen

Suggestions / Feedback:

Payment not in time, payment given is too low, proper payment not given,

contractor keeping some part of the payment, some guys given PF and considered

as permanent contract workmen who even If they take a leave or come after some

days they still are able to keep their job. The non PF guys can be kicked out any

time, don’t get PF, and don’t get proper pay.

Delay in giving uniforms, raincoat, shoes, safety helmets, gloves, some contractors

ask their workmen to pay for it asking them 100 rupees for their shoes etc. Big

contractors already detect the amount systematically from the pay along with PF

etc.

Contract labour of some contractors who eat in the company canteen are made to

wait and only after permanent workmen finish they are let in and don’t get second

serves and also have to pay for their meal. Meals are 12 rupees around and the plate

doesn’t have sufficient rice. Canteen utensils like glass, plate etc. finish after the

permanent workmen have had their food and hence when contract labour come they

tell that because of lack of utensils they can’t serve them food. Canteen itself is run

by a contractor. Some of them have to wash the dirty glasses in order to drink tea.

In the unloading shed in the white area if the trucks come inside the shed then the

workers have to carry the load only a short distance and the work can be done

faster, however bringing the trucks inside the shed is prohibited even though

sometimes they do it. The trucks tires dirty the shed floor which has alumina

hydrate which is white in color so maybe that could be the reason.

Cool drinking water not available at all places and sometimes the labour has to walk

a long distance to have a drink. Toilet facilities are provided however some labour

face issues walking longer distances.

People doing skilled and unskilled jobs both get the same pay. Cleaning the road or

cleaning 100 ft. bauxite tanks, u get paid the same. Climbing the tanks in itself is a

fight among the laborers on who is going to do it. U fall nobody knows u and

supervisor asks who told u to climb so high. Need height allowance? Laborers

doing skilled work get pay of semi-skilled pay.

Contract labor having P.F made to do less work whereas the non P.F guys made to

do more and hence these guys get paid less. In the agreement when work is there

the P.F guys are given preference over the non P.F guys but in reality it is not so.

Load/Unload wagon tipper section where earlier there were around 4 guys for a task

now reduced to 2.5. Workload increase and manpower shortage.

Bauxite crusher area heavy dust and sprinklers not provided near the dust area and

only provided during the wagons entry into the plant.

The overall satisfaction index for supervisory staff is 82.5426%. The satisfaction index for

supervisory cadre has improved since the last survey, however some improvements have to

be made in order to ensure better job involvement and cooperation.

The overall satisfaction index for permanent workmen is 60.7387%. This index has fallen

since the last survey and certain areas like canteen, welfare, recreational and transport need

significant improvements.

The overall satisfaction index for contract workmen is 60.1483%. This index is more or less

the same as the last survey and requires efforts to improve the conditions of the contract

workmen as they form the majority of the workforce and their conditions determine the

productivity of the organization. Certain areas like canteen, welfare etc. require urgent

improvement.
