His Early Life

• Born in Berkeley, England on May 17, 1749

• Orphaned at age 5

• Studied under Daniel Ludlow

• Also studied under Surgeon John Hunter

• He’s known as “The Father of Immunology”

• He discovered the cure for Smallpox

• Studied Cowpox’s relevance to Smallpox

Smallpox – An Overview

• Very contagious, until all scabs are gone

• Rash that can cover the whole body

• High fever

• The only cure is vaccination
