  • 1. There are many negative opinions on Disney and how it promotes stereotypes in gender, race, age and overly sexualised body ideals etc. through their animated films. Kraemer (2000) states children grow into these films, acting out scenes and playing their favourite character. She emphasises the importance of inspirational, positive yet realistic role models that children can aspire

2. One of the main stereotypes seen in Disneys creations is focused around the Disney Princess. Many of these characters have unrealistic beauty, however that is their only asset. They are portrayed as vulnerable helpless females, whose largest desire in life is to find their prince so they can live happily ever after. These role models give children a negative view on women and their capabilities. Possibly limiting their future aspirations and development . (Descartes et al 2011) 3. Although Ariel is clearly fictional she Represents an unrealistic beauty that is seen in many Disney women. The disproportionate facial features and tiny figure reinforce societys expectation for women to be perfect (Haddock et al 2004). The submissive role of women portrayed in The Little Mermaid is emphasized by Ariels surrender of her most prized possession and talent voice. However even without the ability to speak Ariel still wins over Prince Eric with her looks alone. Making this her most important quality. This shallow outlook on women is even evident in the titles of Disney Films such as Beauty and the Beast and Sleeping Beauty. These women are not recognised by their identity or name but by their looks (Craven 2002). Ariel Gives up her family, her home, her voice and drastically changes her body to gain the love of a man. This depicts a dependent view of women for children. It promotes a gender hierarchy with men being the important sex. This could damage childrens self esteem as well as lead to negative behaviour and attitudes. 4. Disneys male protagonists also have many stereotypical characteristics. They have many more aspirations, much more power and respect than the female characters however its not all positive. 5. Beast the male lead in Beauty and the Beast possess the same masculine qualities as many Disney males; Strength, power and a lack of emotion. He gains respect from the fear he possesses over the Citizens. Banduras social learning theory suggests children learn from those around them by observing the consequences to their their actions hence a positive reaction to aggressive actions encourages negative behaviour and affects their moral judgement (Bandura and McDonald 1963). Beast is despised for the way he looks, many children become conscious of their looks and the affect it has on friendships and bullies (Doutre and Mansfield 2010) 6. Frozen represented a big change in childrens Disneys films. The main protagonists consisted of two female siblings Anna and Elsa. For once Disney portrayed women in position of great power, ruling a Kingdom. Both women are confident, skilled and possess so much more than just beauty. Elsa and Anna are the opposite of the acquiescent female princess seen previously (Sawyer 2003). Elsa and Anna have two very different but both confident personalities. Elsa is quiet and self contained however Anna is very lively and bubbly. This reflects the diversity in our society making the characters more relatable to children (Sawyer 2003). These women show admirable characteristics such as; bravery, strength, wisdom, p assion, wittiness and creativity. Hence they make much more significant role Another difference between Frozen and traditional Disney films is the ending. Elsa still lived happily ever after and ruled the kingdom successfully without finding her prince, promoting womens independence and the importance of being happy with your self. There was also a lot of emphasis on the wrongs of marrying a man you have just met. Elsa learnt to appreciate her powers, again promoting diversity and Frozen featured its first proud female heroines. Anna and Elsa saved each other and the kingdom, they not only showed their wisdom but also displayed more masculine actions such as fighting. Other Disney films such as Mulan also feature a heroic female lead however this powerful role is diminished by Mulans need to dress as a male and the use of songs such as Ill make a man out of you Frozen also presented positive changes for male stereotypes too. Kristoff is the main male and is very different from previous male leads. He is not a hero, unrealistically muscly or in a powerful position. He is even referred to as a fixer upper in one of the movies songs. This promotes normality, teaching children nobody is perfect and everyone can improve themselves. Leek (2013)states the importance of emphasising an average male character and not to perceive 7. All Frame File. 2014. Snow White on beautiful Landscape Theme.
