About the Blackout Tracker
• This is a summary of the information presented in the Blackout Tracker Annual Report (available online as a PDF).
• Eaton Corporation tracks power outage in an effort to educate visitors on the causes and impact of power outages. Although we do our best to track this information, we cannot guarantee that every power outage is included.
• The Blackout Tracker is based on reported power outages in news services, newspapers, websites, etc. which often give statistics using different terms. For example, some reports may be based on “people” while others may be based on “addresses,” “homes and businesses” or “utility customers.” For purposes of this report all of these are assumed to be and are counted as people.
• Submit your own power outage reports online.

Top three most significant reported outages1. Earthquake devastated Christchurch, South Island
causing fatalities, destruction and outages for 200,000 people.
2. Fault of unknown origin caused an outage for 200,000 people in Auckland, North Island.
3. Cyclone Yasi hit Townsville, Queensland, knocking out power for 90,000 people.

1. Rugby flags – In two separate incidents flags and bunting caused power outages in Auckland, NI
2. Pesky Possum – A possum got into power lines causing a six minute outage for 8,000 residents of Hastings, NI
3. Wayward seagull – A seagull caused a power outage in Whangaparaoa, NI
