1. Why this presentation? As eTwinning ambassador, on September
18th I organized a regional conference in my town about eTwinning
and CLIL. In Italy this issue is crucial especially in high
schools, as since next year CLIL lessons must be given to all the
pupils attending the last year. And this is the right time to show
how CLIL can be useful to teachers in their every day activity and
for their professional development.
2. eTwinning & CLIL CLILCLIL stands for Content and
LanguageContent and Language Integrated LearningIntegrated Learning
and it was promoted by the European Union in 1995 to reform Member
States' education systems by introducing innovative methods for
teaching in a foreign language with a non-linguistic discipline. 3.
The 4 Cs Content (about the disciplines involved) Communication
(production both in written and oral form) Cognitive ability
("think" in the other language) Intercultural awareness (contacts
with other cultures) 4. CLIL benefits It enhances the language and
communication skills in the language of non-native speakers It
allows a greater diversity of methodologies and approaches to
teaching (cooperative learning, peer-to- peer, web quests...) It
increases pupils' motivation and it allows them to reflect on both
the content and the foreign language 5. Teaching strategies CLIL
teachers: frequently use ICT search alternative approaches to take
into account the specificities of the class and to stimulate
students autonomy and motivation to knowledge, making them actively
responsible about their learning process 6. How the teaching
approach changes The increased use of computer technology enhances
the students' ICT skills and their awareness about its use and they
often ask to share their CLIL knowledge with other mates. helps to
look for partners offers a safe and reliable "social" platform
allows the teachers' professional development at no cost encourages
team work, both with partners and with school colleagues 7. Why a
teacher should use eTwinning? Desktop and partner finding tools
TwinSpace (safe and reliable environment) Professional development
with conferences, seminars and Learning Events Teachers rooms where
to exchange ideas and experiences with colleagues from all over
Europe, pose problems, ask for help, find material and information,
find out that he/she is not alone ... 8. But eTwinning is much
more... eTwinning helps the teacher to achieve: pupils' teaching
skills and their certification internationalization of the school
creation of a portfolio that records some creative learning
experiences use of new technologies to make researches and to
produce new materials enhancement of multiple intelligences . 9.
