How to play cricket

Page 4: E-Magazine, By Wai Yan 2E1

Cricket is a game that requires physical agility to bat, bowl and field. In a cricket game, 2 teams of 11 players each play at one time to bat and field. The game begins with the captains of both teams and the match referee gathering for the toss. The toss winning captain is allowed to choose to bat or field first. Umpires have a key role in the whole game as they monitor it. They decide whether the batsman is out or not. They decide on no balls and wide balls. Their decisions are made by checking the recorded footages carefully. Their greatest responsibility is to ensure that both teams are playing according to the rules.

A glimpse of the game

• 2 batsmen from the batting side and 11 players from the fielding side takes positions. The game begins with the opening bowler from the fielding side bowling to one of the opening batsmen. The batsman hits the balls bowled at them and score runs (points) by running to each stump back and forth. If the batsman hits a ball and that ball bounces, and if that ball touches or goes over the boundary line the batting team gets 4 runs. If the batsman hits the ball and that ball goes right over of the boundary line without bouncing the batting team gets 6 runs. The fielders attempt to stop the ball that was hit and even catch them to get the batsman out. The batsman can also be out of the game when a ball hits the stump. Each bowler gets to bowl 6 legal deliveries to call it an over. The bowling and batting ends change after the completion of every over. An inning is deemed as complete if all the batsmen of the batting team are out or the bowling team has bowled to their full quota of overs. An inning is made up of 50 overs which are 300 bowled deliveries. So there are a 100 overs or 600 bowled deliveries in a cricket match since there are 2 innings made by each 2 teams. The first inning is made by the first batting team of the match. The second inning is made by the second batting team or in other words the first fielding team of the match. When the first batting team has made their innings, in order to win, the second batting team must score higher runs than the first batting team. If both teams score the same number of runs then they look at the wickets to see which team won. The team with the more wickets loses. Even if both teams score the same number of runs and have the same number of wickets then the match is counted as a tie.
