ONCE UPON A TIME…ONCE UPON A TIME…

…there lived 4 fishermen. One unfortunate day, they got lost at sea and landed on an unknown island. They were left with nothing but fishing nets and cold storage boxes. There is only one way to get back home. They have to go fishing and divide the catch eqully among the villagers of the island. The villagers will drop the fishermen as many islands ahead as the number of fish that each one receives. You will play the role of the fishermen and go adventuring out at sea.Happy Fishing!

Use your storytelling skills here! Tell this story with as much excitement and emotion as possible. When children are drawn into the story, they will enjoy

the game even more!

PREPARE THE FISHING NETSPREPARE THE FISHING NETS

Who wins? The player who reaches the home island first is the winner. However, the other players can choose to play until everyone returns home and determine the 1st & 2nd runner-up.

Who moves first? Before starting the game, each player will draw 1 card from the stack of fishing cards. The one who picks the highest number will become the 1st player. Others will follow in clockwise direction.

As a parent or teacher, if you’re playing with the children, offer them actual competition. Don’t just let them win! It will be much more fun and be better

practice if you engage in the game too!

Take out the gameboard and put it on a flat surface. Place the stack of fishing cards facedown next to the edge of the board. Next, each player will select their fisherman pawn and place it on the first island marked with hut.

THE FIRST MOVETHE FIRST MOVEThe 1st player will start the game by picking the top card from the stack of fishing cards. The number on the card is the number of fishes she catches. Remember to keep the cards stacked facedown at all times. Suppose she got 14.

Once the 1st player has identified the number of fishes she caught, she will place her fishing card, face up, next to the stack. This becomes the fishing card discard pile.

Now, the player has to divide the fishes equally among the villagers. The number on the island shows the number of people living there. So the player has to divide 14 fishes among 3 villagers.

dIVIDE AND GO!dIVIDE AND GO!

Now perform the division. 14 fishes divided among 3 people means 4 fishes per villager. And there are 2 to spare. So 2 are remainder fishes that she can keep with her for future moves as STORED FISHES.

Storing more fish than the remainder is not allowed in a single turn.

RemainderRemainder22 xx

In this way, all the players will take turns playing and moving ahead on the board.

THE DEVELOPED ISLANDS THE DEVELOPED ISLANDS

These are lush green islands connected by ONE-WAY BRIDGES. When a player lands on a Town Island, she will cross the bridge from the source island and place her pawn on the destination island. No one lives on the source islands hence they have no number.

The Town Islands

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES will any player move from a destination island to a source island.

The Urban IslandsLet’s imagine that 3rd player lands on an island with a green helicopter.

When the 3rd player lands on the island with helicopter, she will get a free helicopter drop to its destination island. The 3rd player will immediately move her pawn to the destination island.

This is an Urban Island connected by ONE-WAY HELICOPTER. Urban Islands exist in pairs. The island with helicopter is the source island and the one with empty helipad is the destination island. There is a pair of green Urban Islands and a pair of yellow Urban Islands.

THE SAVAGE ISLANDSTHE SAVAGE ISLANDS

Let’s say that, in one of her turns, the 4th player lands on a red island. Beware! These are Savage Islands. These islands are infamous for the notorious tribes residing there.

When a player lands on any of the Savage Islands, the tribal people kidnap them and send them 5 islands back

On her next turn, she will follow the normal procedure of fishing and distribution and move ahead from there.

The 4th player will then take her pawn and move it back 5 islands.

DO NOT FORGETDO NOT FORGET

Towards the end of the game, if the number of fishes you catch is helping you reach Home Island, you can choose to ignore the extra instructions

on the card.

ShortageWhen the number on the Fishing Card is less than the population of the island, a player can:

THE STORED FISHES STRATEGYTHE STORED FISHES STRATEGY

You can use the stored fishes during any turn in the game.

The STORED FISHES can be used to take advantage of moving ahead more islands or escaping the Savage Islands.

or

In her current turn, she catches 12 fishes. Now, she can distribute 10 fishes among the 5 villagers, store 2 fishes, and move ahead 2 islands;

She can use her STORED FISHES to move more islands. She can add the 5 STORED FISHES to the 12 she caught in this turn. That makes total 17 fishes. She will distribute 3 fishes to each villager and store 2 fishes. She can now move ahead 3 islands instead of 2.

USING THE LOGIC SLATEUSING THE LOGIC SLATEAt the beginning of the game, give a watercolor pen and logic slate to each player. Players can use these to determine the number of islands to move ahead and the remainder fishes to collect.

Encourage kids to use logic slates to perform division operations. This will improve their accuracy and also help them perform better during the game.

Let’s say the 3rd player draws a fishing card with 15 on it.She is on an island with 4 villagers. She will write 15 in the ‘fishes you caught’ space and 4 on the ‘villagers on the island’ space.15 is not divisible by 4. The nearest number divisible by 4 is 12. 3 times 4 is 12. So she will write 12 below 15 and 3 on the ‘steps you move’ space. Next, she will subtract 12 from 15 and determine the remainder. Once she has determined the remainder, she will write it on the remainder space.

You will notice that players solve division problems not only during their own turn, but also during their competitors’ turns! That’s the power of this game. Try

getting that much done with homework!Players complete up to 70 division problems in each game session with 4 players.

That is 8 times more calculations than they would do in a normal class!
