What Is The Time Of The End? ! But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Then I Daniel looked, and, behold, there stood other two, the one on this side of the bank of the river, and the other on that side of the bank of the river. And one said to the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, How long shall it be to the end of these wonders? And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that [it shall be] for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished. And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things? And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. What Is The Time Of The End?

And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent... And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days. Revelation 12:6, 14

The time of the End is ?

STUDIES IN DANIEL 11“Identifying the King of the North”

NOTE – In this study we will seek to identify the power in Dan. 11 known as the “king of the north.”

POINT – The FIRST point that we must realize is that God is actually the TRUE “King of the north”!

Ezekiel 1:4-5, 26-28Isaiah 14:12-14

Identifying the “King of the North” God is the TRUE “King of the North” – He

occupies the highest position. Satan is the first counterfeit “king of the

north,” who desires to sit in God’s place. Satan has also used certain earthly powers

as counterfeit “kings of the north” to persecute and enslave God’s followers.

One such earthly power was that of ancient Babylon, which took ancient Israel captive.

JEREMIAH 4:6-7 “(6) Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. (7) The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make thy land desolate; and thy cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.”

JEREMIAH 25:9 “Behold, I will send and take all the families of the north, saith the Lord, and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will bring them against this land, and against the inhabitants thereof, and against all these nations round about, and will utterly destroy them, and make them an astonishment, and an hissing, and perpetual desolations.”

NOTE – Daniel 11 also contains THREE more earthly counterfeit “kings of the north” that have persecuted and enslaved God’s faithful followers.

NOTE – The FIRST earthly counterfeit “king of the north” in Dan. 11 is the Hellenistic power of Seleucid Syria, located north of ancient Israel. The activities of this power are mentioned in Dan. 11:5-15, as it warred against Ptolemaic Egypt (the “king of the south”) for control of Israel.

NOTE – Dan. 11:5-15 discusses the activities of several Seleucid-Syrian kings as they warred against several Ptolemaic kings and eventually defeated Egypt for control of Israel. Pagan Rome later conquered Syria, an event brought to view in Dan. 11:16.

Daniel 11:16 (KJV)“But he [Pagan Rome] that cometh against him [Seleucid Syria] shall do according to his own will, and none shall stand before him: and he shall stand in the glorious land [Israel], which by his hand shall be consumed.”

NOTE – The SECOND earthly counterfeit “king of the north” in Dan. 11 is Pagan Rome, the next power after Seleucid Syria to persecute and enslave God’s followers.

NOTE – Pagan Rome as the second earthly counterfeit “king of the north” is further confirmed in the passage of Dan. 11:25-28, which describes the war between Rome under Octavian (the “king of the north”) and Egypt under Mark Antony (the “king of the south”). Octavian defeated Antony and Cleopatra at Actium in 31 BC.

Daniel 11:25 (KJV)“And he shall stir up his power and his courage against the king of the south with a great army; and the king of the south shall be stirred up to battle with a very great and mighty army; but he shall not stand: for they shall forecast devices against him.”

NOTE – The THIRD earthly counterfeit “king of the north” in Dan. 11 after Seleucid Syria and Pagan Rome is the next power in sequence, i.e. Dark Age Papal Rome (538-1798), which comes into view in Dan. 11:30-39.

Daniel 11:30-31 (KJV)“(30) For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. (31) And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.”

NOTE – The power of Dark Age Papal Rome as the next earthly counterfeit “king of the north” is further confirmed by the fact that this power persecuted and enslaved the people of God.

Daniel 11:32-33 (KJV)“(32) And such as do wickedly against the covenant shall he corrupt by flatteries: but the people that do know their God shall be strong, and do exploits. (33) And they that understand among the people shall instruct many: yet they shall fall by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and by spoil, many days.”

Daniel 11:34-35 (KJV)“(34) Now when they shall fall, they shall be holpen with a little help: but many shall cleave to them with flatteries. (35) And some of them of understanding shall fall, to try them, and to purge, and to make them white, even to the time of the end: because it is yet for a time appointed.”

NOTE – The power of Dark Age Papal Rome as the next earthly counterfeit “king of the north” is also confirmed by the fact that this power has magnified itself above the God of heaven, thus seeking the highest place and position (the “north”).

Daniel 11:36-37 (KJV)“(36) And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done. (37) Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god: for he shall magnify himself above all.”

Papal Rome as the “King of the North” This power equates itself with God. Like Satan, therefore, it desires to

sit in the sides of the “north,” i.e. in God’s place, the highest position.

Like Seleucid Syria and Pagan Rome before it, the Dark Age papacy also sought to persecute and enslave the faithful people of God.

NOTE – There is one final passage in Dan. 11 that discusses the “king of the north.” This is the well-known passage of Dan. 11:40.

KEY QUESTIONWhat is the identity of the “king of the north” in Dan. 11:40?

The “King of the North” in Dan. 11:40 The “king of the north” is still Papal

Rome in Dan. 11:40. There are several reasons as to why

this power is still Papal Rome. There is no transference to another

historical power taking place between Dan. 11:30 and 11:40.

The “King of the North” in Dan. 11:40 Ellen White stated that Dan. 11:30-36

will be repeated, a text dealing with the history of Dark Age Papal Rome.

Dan. 11:40-45 deals with the actual repetition of this history; since Papal Rome will repeat its Dark Age history at the end of time, the “king of the north” must still be this power!

The “King of the North” in Dan. 11:40 Again, Dan. 11:30-39 deals with the

history of the Dark Age Papacy as the “king of the north” (538-1798).

Dan. 11:40-45 describes the last-day phase of Papal Rome as the “king of the north,” spanning the deadly wound, the healing of this wound, and its end-time activity (1798-End).

The “King of the North” in Dan. 11:40 The first earthly counterfeit “king of the

north” was ancient Babylon, while the final earthly counterfeit is spiritual Babylon, a symbol of Papal Rome.

The final power in each of Daniel’s prophecies is Papal Rome; since the “king of the north” is the final power in Dan. 11, it must be a symbol of Papal Rome; this is the biggest reason as to why this power could not be Turkey!

STUDIES IN DANIEL 11“Identifying the King of the South”

Daniel 11:40 (KJV)“And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.”

Three Main Concepts in Daniel 11:40 “Time of the End” – 1798 to the end. “King of the North” – Papacy “King of the South” – ????? To understand the identity of this

power, we must examine the identity of the “king of the south” from earlier passages in Dan. 11. There are three periods of warfare between the kings of the north and south in Dan. 11.

The “King of the South” in Daniel 11

Verses 5-15 – Ptolemaic Egypt is the “king of the south” in these verses, having been located south of Israel.

Verses 25-28 – Ptolemaic Egypt is still the “king of the south” in these verses, with Mark Antony leading Egypt against Octavian of Rome through his influence with Queen Cleopatra VII of Egypt.

The “King of the South” in Daniel 11:40

Verse 40 – this text states that the “king of the south” would “push” against the “king of the north” (Papal Rome) “AT” the “time of the end,” i.e. in the year 1798.

Several Bible translations use the specific term “AT” with reference to the “time of the end” (KJV, NKJV, NASB, NRSV, NIV, ESV), which conveys that the activity took place right in the actual year of 1798.

The “King of the South” in Dan. 11:40

The word “push” is the Hebrew word nagach (Strong’s 5055), which means to “butt with horns,” to “war against,” or to “gore” (2 Chr. 18:10; Dan. 8:4).

This term implies that the “king of the south” ends the power of Papal Rome in the year 1798, being synonymous with the deadly wound (see Rev. 13:3, 10).

The “King of the South” in Dan. 11:40 Since the “king of the south” is Egypt in Dan.

11:5-15 and 11:25-28, it must still be associated with “Egypt” in verse 40, as there is no mention of another power for the “south” between Dan. 11:28 and 11:40.

Yet, in Dan. 11:40, the term “Egypt” must be viewed in a symbolic, spiritual sense (not in a literal sense), similar to how the terms “Babylon” and “Israel” are understood in a symbolic sense in post-Calvary prophecy.

The “King of the South” in Dan. 11:40 In Exodus 5:1-2, Pharaoh of Egypt actually

denied the existence of the true God.

Since “Egypt” is associated with a denial of the existence of the true God, this term must be associated with ATHEISM.

the term “Egypt” in Bible prophecy is to be associated with the concept of atheism.

3-6 “And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed

in sackcloth. These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth. And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth

their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to

turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.”

Then we see in verse 3, something new— two witnesses; and they are ‘prophesying for 1260 day/years dressed in sackcloth’.

As you read verses 3-7, you will see clues to know what they are. They are the Holy Scriptures, the Old and the New Testaments.

They are in ‘sackcloth’, Why? Sackcloth is something

people used to wear when they were very sad. And

again we see that 1260-year period mentioned. The

message of God’s Holy Word is said to be sad and hidden

at this time as millions of true believers died for their faith and even to be caught with a Bible meant death.

But the Bible still had ‘power’; when people would

get hold of the Bible and read it, they found the saving

power of Jesus in it. 

Revelation 11:7,8 “And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit

shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great

city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.”

Now we come to an amazing story in prophecy; we see the 2 witnesses ‘finishing’ their testimony in sackcloth, for that is what

the words in Greek really tell us. So we know that something happened to the Bible near the end of those 1260 years that

ended in 1798. Did something happen then?

Yes, it says a ‘Beast’ comes out of the bottomless pit. A beast in bible prophecy

represents a nation. The bottomless pit refers to the wickedness and spiritual darkness of

this world, so out of this wicked world comes a new ‘Beast’; a new ruling power.

Atheism and the “King of the South” the beast from the bottomless pit,

spiritually called Egypt (Rev. 11:7-8), is an atheistic power.

Daniel and Revelation go together; it is consistent for “Egypt” to symbolize atheism in both prophetic books.

The “king of the south” in the first part of Dan. 11:40 and the beast of Rev. 11:7-8 are descriptive of the same power.

Atheism and the “King of the South” Therefore, in the year 1798, atheism must

have dealt the papacy its “deadly would” by “pushing” against this power.

The atheistic power that “pushed” against the papacy was that of revolutionary France, which defied God and exalted “reason.”

In Feb. 1798 the French army ended the civil power of the papacy, ending its 1260-year dark-age rule, which went from 538 to 1798.

If what we said about the ‘king of the north’ being Papal Rome is true- we should see something happen in 1798 – somebody should ‘push at him’. This word translated 'push' means to wage war against, like we

see the Ram in chapter 8 of Daniel 'Pushing westward, and northward, and southward;'  and this meant he was attacking and

making war against those areas

Does history also tell us that France literally concerned Egypt ?

The “King of the North” Responds Dan. 11:40 also states that the “king

of the north” responds to the “push” of atheism by conquering this force.

What Does Whirlwind Mean? !

The LORD is slow to anger, and great in power, and will not at all acquit the wicked: the LORD hath his way in the whirlwind and in the storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. Nahum 1:3.

! Behold, I will make thee a new sharp threshing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thresh the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff. Thou shalt fan them, and the wind shall carry them away, and the whirlwind shall scatter them: and thou shalt rejoice in the LORD, and shalt glory in the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 41:15, 16.

! Before your pots can feel the thorns, he shall take them away as with a whirlwind, both living, and in his wrath. Psalms 58:9. ! When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you. Proverbs 1:27.

The next question is— when did Papal Rome strike back against ‘atheism’? Well we have a long period of time

that passes between the King of the South pushing— and the King of the North coming like a whirlwind. But down through the years they have been conflicting with each other. 

The first thing happened in 1798— the next part just happened in

1989 when the Pope with the help of USA brought about the fall of the ‘Atheist’ power, the

USSR.

ROME STARTS ITS 3RD & FINAL RISE TO POWER: PAPAL ROME'S DEADLY WOUND HEALED 

Just like in 508 when Clovis King of France pledged himself

to help the Papacy, and the prophecy says, "Arms shall

stand on his part", so in 1984, 'arms have chosen to stand' on the part of the rising King of the North power, the Papacy; when secret agreements were made between the Pope and the USA

president; 

"with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many

ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.”

What Do The Chariots And Horsemen Represent?

But the Egyptians pursued after them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his army, and overtook them encamping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baalzephon. Exodus 14:9.

Which bringeth forth the chariot and horse, the army and the power; they shall lie down together, they shall not rise: they are extinct, they are quenched as tow. Isaiah 43:17.

And Benhadad the king of Syria gathered all his host together: and there were thirty and two kings with him, and horses, and chariots: and he went up and besieged Samaria, and warred against it. 1 Kings 20:1.

What Are The Ships?

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters. Psalms 107:23.

For in one hour so great riches is come to nought. And every shipmaster, and all the company in ships, and sailors, and as many as trade by sea, stood afar off. Revelation 18:17.

She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. Proverbs 31:14.

'Chariots and Horsemen' means military strength and 'Ships' refers to economic

sanctions. This is just exactly what was used to bring USSR down. He entered into the

'countries', plural- the USSR was made up of several countries, not just 1, and indeed, the

joint power of the Vatican and the USA certainly did 'overflow and pass over'!

And just as when first Pagan and later Papal  Rome, came to rule the

world and had to conquer 3 areas; so as the King of the North begins his last rise to power, he has 3

areas to overthrow also. And the first one is

already conquered! What was it? It was the 'wall'

between communism and the west. It 'fell' in 1989.

What are the other 2 areas that have to be overcome before the

deadly wounded beast again rules the world?

There, in the spacious ceremonial library of the 16th century Apostolic Palace, the czar of world atheism, Mikhail Gorbachev, will visit the Vicar of Christ, Pope John Paul II…

41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many {countries} shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and

Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon. 

It is important to realize what is meant here by the Glorious Land— It is NOT literal Israel as these are end-time prophecies and apply to

'spiritual' Israel; and it is NOT the same as the Glorious Holy Mountain which represents God's Truth and His True and Faithful ones. 

The Lord provided a goodly or glorious land for ancient Israel, and He provided a goodly or glorious land for modern Israel. The

purpose for both was the same. It was an asylum for His people, and a depository for His pure religion:

glorious-6643: in the sense of prominence; splendor (as conspicuous), beautiful, goodly. Strong's.

“The Lord has done more for the United States than for any other country upon

which the sun shines.

Here He provided an asylum for His people, where they could worship Him according to the

dictates of conscience. Here Christianity has progressed in its purity. The life-giving

doctrine of the one Mediator between God and man has been freely taught.

God designed that this country should ever remain free for all people to

worship Him in accordance with the dictates of conscience. He designed that its civil institutions, in their expansive

productions, should represent the freedom of gospel privileges.”

Maranatha 193 

Glorious Country in this prophecy points us to the nation of United States. When a national Sunday law is passed in the United States,

this country will symbolically join hands with Rome. It will also, symbolically begin to march, or follow, in the steps of Rome: Can

two walk together, except they be agreed? Amos 3:3.

Those Who Join HandsIn this verse the word ‘countries’ was put there by the translators as

they thought it belonged, but it is not in the original. Many 'countries' will not be overthrown at the time of the national Sunday law, just many

people. The previous verse refers to many countries as the former countries of the Soviet Union became prey for Rome, and the next verse

speaks of countries as it describes the whole world coming under the dominion of Rome. However, this verse is dealing only with the national

Sunday law in the United States, and at this point, only many will be overthrown, not many countries. Who are the people that will be

overthrown?

They are those who have professed to believe in the messages of the 3 angels but they have been influenced by the world and now they give

up the faith and follow with those making void the law of God. We see many overthrown but we see some that escape!

“Servants of God, endowed with power from on high with their faces lighted up, and shining with holy consecration, went forth to proclaim the message from heaven.  Souls that were scattered all through the religious bodies answered to the call, and the precious were hurried out of the doomed churches, as Lot was hurried out of Sodom before

her destruction.” EW 279

Ammon, Moab, and Edom are used to symbolize those who respond to the loud-cry message and stand for the truth. Moab, Ammon, and

Edom were close relatives of ancient Israel.

It is interesting to note that the word escape in this verse is different than the word translated escape in the very next verse.  The people

who escape this national Sunday law escape by slipperiness, and the verse says, escape out of his hand.  The definition of this word

brings to mind the type of slipperiness when one cannot hold onto a bar of soap in a tub of water.  It slips right out of one's hand.

42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 

Here we see it telling us that Egypt is not going to escape. Egypt is used in prophecy to mean 2 things; the secular world at large and atheism in

particular. So he controls the world, not just the churches. There are many who say, "Well, I am not involved with all this religious stuff, so it won't

affect me." We are assured here that he is going to control all the countries of the world, not just religious people, but all. 

A law will be passed to FORCE all to keep holy the Sunday of Rome and desecrate the Bible 7th Day Sabbath! First the law will be passed in the

USA and then it will force the world to follow and do the same thing. Does the United Sates now have power to force nations to do what she wants?  Oh yes, indeed it has. What happens then? It leads to the close

of human probation— this is a very important fact and one of those walls is already down and the other two are crumbling!

43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians

shall be at his steps.

Now this verse is full of symbolic meaning— Power over the treasures; this shows the despotic power will control the financial world— economic

sanctions and control on a level never before possible!  

Libyans and Ethiopians likewise have symbolic meaning; Libya was very poor in Bible times and Ethiopia was very rich. So here it is saying that both the rich and the poor of the earth are going to be in step with him. They are

all going to go along with him. 

44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make

away many.

God’s sealing message is the message from the east.  The righteous man from the east and north is Christ.  The message of Christ that comes from

the east and north is the good tidings of the "Lord our righteousness," which is, of course, the three angels' messages.  (Revelation 14) It is the message by which, first, the church, and then the world, will be tested. 

Moreover, it is this message that will enrage the king of the north.

Once again, the final scenes will be rapid ones.  The beginning of the Latter Rain will occur sometime shortly before or right after the National

Sunday Law will be passed in the United States, but it will continue to accelerate and to grow until the close of human probation.  The preceding

verses illustrate the final steps of the Papacy; they have not focused specifically on what God's people are doing while the pope is taking

control of the world-but verse 44 does.

The tidings which come from the north and east are the glad tidings of Christ's righteousness that are swelling into a loud cry, and giving the

world its final message of warning.  This message will go forth as the pope takes control of the world.  As he does so, he will begin to deal with the

troublers in his midst, eventually leading to a worldwide death decree— to utterly make away many. 

As the crowning act in the great drama of deception, Satan himself will personate Christ. The church has long professed to look to the Saviour's advent as the consummation of her hopes. Now the great deceiver will make it appear that Christ has come. In different parts of the earth, Satan will manifest himself among men as a majestic being of dazzling brightness, resembling the description of the Son of God given by John in the Revelation. . . . The shout of triumph rings out upon the air, "Christ has come! Christ has come!" The people prostrate themselves in adoration before him. . . . In gentle, compassionate tones he presents some of the same gracious, heavenly truths which the Saviour uttered; he heals the diseases of the people, and then, in his assumed character of Christ, he claims to have changed the Sabbath to Sunday, and commands all to hallow the day which he has blessed. . . . {FLB 346.2}
