A Changing Environment for Medical and Health Service Managers,

Directors & Chief Officers “As healthcare changes, medical and health services managers

must be able to adapt to changes in laws, regulations, and technology.” - Occupational Outlook Handbook 2012

Medical and health services managers typically do the following: Work to improve efficiency and quality in delivering healthcare

services Keep up to date on new laws and regulations to aid in compliance Manage finances of the facility, such as patient fees and billing Create work schedules Represent the facility at investor meetings or on governing

boards Keep and organize records of the facility’s services, such as the

number of inpatient beds used Communicate with members of the medical staff and department

heads

ACHE Healthcare Executive Survey Research

Study Builds Upon Dr. Hilsenrath’s earlier research on healthcare education settings and appropriate curriculum. Key Findings and Conclusions: Distinction between MHA and MBA is not well defined.

Great deal of differentiation among programs Growing recognition of MBA in HC Management due to need for

Leadership, Operational, Management Skills and Creativity Generally, MHA preferred over MBA in HC Mgmt. which is preferred

over Gen. Mgmt. MBA (See source below for original research- Table 3 p352)

More than ¾ of survey respondents indicated they would choose a career in healthcare management again

Bottom line: There is not a “one-size” education fits all, it really depends on your goals.
