2. Western Dark and Light Archetypes

  • Lets take a look at some of the older stories and literature in western civilization and see if the light and dark archetypes appear

3. Lets start with Jesus 4. Jesus represents salvation, and hope. This image is associated with the light 5. Of course there is his counterpart, Satan 6. Satan represents all that is evil, thus he is associated with the dark 7. Next lets jump to the Greek Gods 8. The Greek Gods show the light and the dark in each individual God 9. Lets look at Ares, the God of war, bloodlust, hatred, and Frenzy 10. Ares clearly represents the more primal side of human nature, thus it is associated with the dark or the shadow archetype 11. Ares counterpart is Demeter, the goddess of rebirth, fertility and the pure 12. Demeter represents the pure and the hope for rebirth and thus represents the light 13. And finally, lets jump into the present and look at Spider-man 14. Spider-man 3 has the perfect portrayal of the shadow within archetype 15. Red Spidey= Good and moral= Light 16. Black Spidey= Vengeful and Stronger= Shadow or Dark 17. Chinese Dark and Light Archetypes

  • Now lets jump to ancient Chinese literature where we can see that the same dark and light archetypes reappear

18. Well start with the novel,(Romance of the Three Kingdoms) 19. Liu Bei, the protagonist, is benevolent and kind and thus represents the light 20. The antagonist Cao Cao is cruel and ruthless and thus represents the dark 21. Next we jump to(Journey to the West) 22. The Monkey King is the protagonist and he represents the good. He thus represents the light 23. The Demon King represents evil and thus is associated with the dark 24. We can see the symbols remain relatively constant 25. Evil usually is associated with the dark 26. Hope and Good is usually associated with the light
