A ‘strike’ vs a ‘hit’

KE: Social Currency

J. Berger: ‘Contagious’ [STEPPS] What is ‘Social Currency’? How can we use it in class?

KE: Sociality

M. Lieberman: ‘Social’ The importance of sociality How can we use it in class?

Act: Who am I?

On a post-it note, write down the name of a famous person Stick the note on your partner’s forehead Your partner has to try to guess who they are They can only ask 20 ‘Yes – No’ questions

KE: Identity

J. Haidt: ‘The Righteous Mind’ Why is our identity so important? How can we use it in class?

Act: A Response13 REASONS WHY I DON’T LIKE GREECE 5. The light: You cannot step out of the van without a pair of very, very good sunglasses. And a spare one. The light is so blindingly strong, colours lose their meaning; you just cannot make them out.

6. The food: Tomatoes, tzatziki, feta, olives – that’s it. Wherever you go, you’ll find exactly the same things, prepared in exactly the same way.

11. The capital: Athens lacks character; it’s just a random assortment of buildings, haphazardly scattered all over the place. I challenge you to find a single place with some kind of identity.

12. It’s van unfriendly: Greece is wildcamping hell. If you are lucky to find an unfenced place to stop for the night, the police may fine you or worse... If a local guy knocks on the van, chances are he wants to tell you you are trespassing and you’d better move on. His shotgun makes him persuasive. That brings us to the last one…

13. The People: Driving through all these countries you really get to notice the difference in the people. But the Greeks have to be the most surly, unfriendly, suspicious and xenophobic people I’ve met… ever met actually.

Act: A Response

Choose one of these points With your partner, write a proper response Your response should be about 4 lines long You can be as frank as you want, but please be civil

Act: A Response13 REASONS WHY I LOVE GREECE 5. The light: The light IS different in Greece. I thought I was getting better at taking photos, but I’m not, it’s the light.

6. The food: The best tomatoes, tzatziki, feta, wild figs, olives… I could go on and on. In the past 7 months, I’ve probably eaten better than I ever have in my life. You can’t not.

11. The capital: Athens is a strange mishmash of everything. It’s such a unique city. You feel as though there is something hidden round every corner–and there usually is. I love this place.

12. It’s van friendly x100: There’s just so much open space without fences or no entry signs. Greece is wildcamping paradise. And If a local guy knocks on the van, it’s probably because he wants to give you some of his grandmas homemade Spinach pie rather than tell you that the beach is not a camp site. That brings us to the last one…

13. The People: Driving through all these countries you really get to notice the difference in the people. But the Greeks stand out a mile. They are by the most friendly, fun, chilled and hospitable people I’ve met… ever met actually.

KE: Incongruity

K. Dutton: ‘Flipnosis’ [SPICE] Why is incongruity so powerful? How can we use it in class?

Act: CreativityFE: Fedex Ground get this to Cleveland on Wednesday.N: Fedex? Aren’t they a little pricey?ME: Ned – you’re always wrong!N: How am I always wrong?ME: OK, let’s review: Steely Dan is not one person; we get ‘fringe benefits’

not ‘French benefits’; James Dean is an actor; Jamie Dean makes sausage; and you know what Ned? It’s not ‘the leaning tower of Pizza’…

N: So, Fedex isn’t… too expensive? (colleagues shake their heads) We don’t get ‘French benefits’?

(Slogan): Fedex Ground. Reliability for less than you think.

Act: Creativity (An Example)A: You know what? I’m thinking of becoming a language teacher…B: Ha! Trust Nick to go for a cushy option…A: B – you’re always wrong!B: How am I always wrong?A: OK, let’s review: Tsipras is not a native English speaker; an eggplant

is not a kind of omelet; G. W. Bush does not have an IQ of 150.B: So being a language teacher is not a cushy option? (A shakes his/her

head) Are you sure about Tsipras?!?(Slogan): ‘ELT – for serious masochists…’

Act: Creativity (Framework)A: (…a comment containing the main idea…)B: (…an objection…)A: B – you’re always wrong!B: How am I always wrong?A: OK, let’s review: (…lists 3 - 4 silly things that B believes…)B: So ….. ? (A shakes his/her head) (B expresses amazement about one of

the previous points)(Slogan): (…Optional)

KE: Emotion

D. Evans: ‘Emotion’ The slow route and the fast route Why are emotions so potent? How can we use emotions in class?

Act: Picture the Scene

Listen to these audioclips from movie soundtracks As you listen, try to picture the scene in your mind’s eye Make very brief notes (just a few words) When the music stops, share the image in your mind with your

partner. Have they pictured something similar?

Take-aways…

Five principles: We tend to share interesting / counterintuitive material Social activities make us happier Our ‘hivish’ tendencies can be powerful motivators Incongruity makes us take notice Emotion makes things memorable
