What are Mobile RLOs?

RLOs are Reusable Learning Objects. Mobile RLOs are RLOs designed for easy access and display using mobile devices, such as smartphones or tablets.

RLOs have the following benefits:• Create a situated, just-in-time learning experience;• Can be accessed and reused at any time;• Are easy and fun to use;• Help learners to develop additional soft skills related to

both technology and lifelong learning;

Principles of Good RLO Design

Collaborative Situated Active mLearning (CSAM) is an effective design strategy for mobile RLOs.

CSAM considers the three domains of the FRAME (Framework for the Rational Analysis of Mobile Education) model:• Device Aspect• User Aspect• Social Aspect The FRAME model

Device and Interface Considerations

General Tips:• Keep it simple.• In Winksite, use the default settings.• Don't overload the site with images or

flashy extras.• Keep content in small chunks.• Consider using a BYOD (Bring Your Own

Device) approach.(Learners will already be familiar with how to use their own devices!)

Transactions

Transactions refer to how users interact with the mobile device, the learning content, their instructors, and each other.

• The content should be relevant and meaningful to learners.

• The content and activities should be situated in a realistic context.

• Learners should do something with the content.• Learning increases, and is more fun, when

learners collaborate with each other (and with the instructor)!

Effective RLO

Design

C = Collaborative

Does your RLO provide learners with an opportunity to collaborate?

• If yes, great! Are there any ways that learners could be collaborating more?

• If no, are there any ways that the learning activity could get learners working together, or sharing skills or ideas?

A = Active

Do your learners have an opportunity to do something with the content of your RLO?

• If yes, great! Engaging with the content reduces boredom, and makes learning more meaningful.

• If no, is there anything that your learners could do with the content to create a new artefact, or to make the content personally meaningful?

S = Situated

Is your learning activity situated in a realistic context?

• If yes, great! Learning is more meaningful and fun when it is in a realistic context!

• If no, how can you change your learning activity so that it takes place in a realistic context?

M = Mobile

Does your RLO free learners from the tether of traditional classroom routines?

• mLearning is about expanding learning possibilities. It can be a powerful way to augment other successful classroom strategies.

• Getting learners to use their mobile devices creates excitement, and gets them engaged in the learning activity.

• You don't need to take your learners out of the classroom to eliminate the classroom's walls! • But if you do take them outside of the classroom, using mobile RLOs is a great way to provide

learners with the resources they will need, connect them with you and with each other, and focus them on the intended learning task!
