BackgroundE-Connectivity -- Social Connection in an Online

Classroom

Studies have identified the need for…

Achieving a social connection (e-connectivity)

with their students (Slagter van Tryon & Bishop,

2006)

Increasing interactivity that “will help the

students' with their understanding” (Swanson,

Hutkin, Babb, & Howell, 2010, p. 121).

BackgroundWarm, Friendly, Honest, and Caring

Participants 100% agreed that faculty should be:

warm,

available to answer questions;

hold students to a high standard,

remain flexible to adult learners;

honest in all of their interactions, and

demonstrate a caring nature in the online classroom”

(Swanson, Hutkin, Babb, & Howell, 2010, p. 119).

Personalize the Message

“Videos or podcasts can help students connect with and understand

content in a way that print (or slides) alone may not be able to achieve.

Videos, blogs, wikis, and discussion forums can also personalize the

discipline and allow students to get to know the teacher as an

individual who cares about student learning and success.

It is one thing for a student to read a syllabus (or any document) about

course requirements and expectations, but quite another for a teacher

on video to talk about opportunities for learning and his or her teaching

philosophy, just as Bain argues the best teachers do in the traditional

classroom.”

Anecdotal Evidence

Students say… I gain from this type of

feedback as I am a visual learner.

Hearing your voice helps me to understand the concept that you are explaining.

Instructor Specialists say… Providing this type of

feedback is as though you are sitting with the student and guiding him or her through the paper. Great job!

Anyone care to do a study

on this?

“If a video requires a large amount of

information, it is better for me as a student

to have the video or audio separated into

several separate videos or have one long

video that is easy to revert back to sections

of it, in order to review material.”

(Gladstein, 2008, p. 68

Break into Short Videos

“Developers should follow the lead of video

portals such as YouTube or Google Video and

limit their videos to a size that downloads or

plays quickly. Given that contemporary

learners move at “twitch speed,” shorter

length multimedia may be better.”

(Gladstein, 2008, p. 68)
